Znanstvenici upozoravaju kako bi topljenje permafrosta na Arktiku moglo osloboditi radon, radioaktivni plin koji može uzrokovati rak - prenosi Oslobođenje.

Trenutačno radon nije žuran problem u arktičkim regijama gdje tlo ostaje zamrznuto tijekom cijele godine jer permafrost sprječava izlazak plina iz zemlje, rekao je za Live Science Paul Goodfellow, stručnjak za ekološki program za geoopasnosti pri Odjelu za geološka i geofizička istraživanja Aljaske. Ali kako se permafrost topi, ovaj zaštitni štit nestaje.

Znanstvenici upozoravaju kako bi topljenje permafrosta na Arktiku moglo osloboditi radon, radioaktivni plin koji može uzrokovati rak - prenosi Oslobođenje. 

Permafrost, koji tlo na Arktiku drži smrznutim tijekom cijele godine, djeluje poput poklopca koji sprječava isparavanje raznih plinova u atmosferu. Najpoznatiji od njih je metan, snažan staklenički plin koji se oslobađa otapanjem permafrosta, čime se ubrzavaju klimatske promjene.

No, u novoj studiji objavljenoj u ožujku u časopisu Earth-Science Reviews, istraživači primjećuju kako još jedan opasni plin vreba ispod arktičkog permafrosta, a to je radon. Taj plin bez boje i mirisa dio je radioaktivnog raspada prirodnog urana. Poznato je da se nakuplja u domovima, posebno u podrumima, povećavajući dugoročni rizik od raka pluća za stanovnike. Prema Agenciji za zaštitu okoliša, radon je drugi vodeći uzrok raka pluća u Sjedinjenim Državama, odgovoran za 21 tisuću smrti godišnje.

Trenutačno radon nije žuran problem u arktičkim regijama gdje tlo ostaje zamrznuto tijekom cijele godine jer permafrost sprječava izlazak plina iz zemlje, rekao je za Live Science Paul Goodfellow, stručnjak za ekološki program za geoopasnosti pri Odjelu za geološka i geofizička istraživanja Aljaske. Ali kako se permafrost topi, ovaj zaštitni štit nestaje.

Znanstvenici upozoravaju kako bi topljenje permafrosta na Arktiku moglo osloboditi radon, radioaktivni plin koji može uzrokovati rak - prenosi Oslobođenje.

Taj plin bez boje i mirisa dio je radioaktivnog raspada prirodnog urana. Poznato je da se nakuplja u domovima, posebno u podrumima, povećavajući dugoročni rizik od raka pluća za stanovnike. Prema Agenciji za zaštitu okoliša, radon je drugi vodeći uzrok raka pluća u Sjedinjenim Državama, odgovoran za 21 tisuću smrti godišnje.
