Afroamerikanka Opal Tometi (36), rođena u SAD-u kao dijete imigranata iz Nigerije, postala je poznata širom Amerike kad je 2013. godine, skupa s Patrisse Cullors i Alicijom Garza, osnovala pokret "Black Lives Matter" (Crni životi su važni).
Povod za osnivanje pokreta bilo je mučko ubojstvo 17-godišnjeg afroameričkog tinejdžera Trayvona Martina, kojeg je 26. veljače 2012. u gradu Sanfordu na Floridi ubio bijelac George Zimmerman. Preciznije, pokret je osnovan nakon što je u srpnju 2013. Zimmerman na sudu oslobođen krivnje za ubojstvo Martina, jer je porota uvažila njegovu obranu da je pucao u samoobrani, premda su brojne indicije ukazivale da ga Martin ničim nije ugrožavao.
Ubojica Zimmerman bio je pripadnik tzv. "Građanske straže", neformalne bjelačke civilne skupine čiji članovi nadziru svoje četvrti te interveniraju u slučaju vandalizma i kriminala, obično na način da nazovu policiju kad u kvartu uoče nešto "sumnjivo". Pokojni Martin vraćao se iz trgovine noseći u vrećici slatkiše i ledeni čaj, te se Zimmermanu učinio "sumnjivim" pa ga je upucao iz neposredne blizine.
Istraga je pokazala da je Martin bio miran mladić, bez policijskog dosjea, za razliku od Zimmermana, koji je 2005. bio prijavljen policiji zbog nasilja nad zaručnicom (isti krimen ponovio je i 2013., samo dva mjeseca nakon što je oslobođen za ubojstvo Martina – tada je prijetio pištoljem vlastitoj supruzi i njezinu ocu). Pa ipak, sudska porota ga je oslobodila, što je bio signal afroameričkoj zajednici da pokrene velike prosvjede, čiji je rezultat bio osnivanje pokreta "Black Lives Matter".
Nezaposleni na ulicama
Sedam godina kasnije svoju "sumnjivost" na brutalan je način u Minneapolisu glavom platio i 46-godišnji Afroamerikanac George Floyd, što je bio povod za najveće prosvjede u Americi u zadnjih pola stoljeća, čime je i pokret "Black Lives Matter" ponovo došao u fokus.
Otuda je i list "The New Yorker" ovog tjedna objavio razgovor s Opal Tometi, pod naslovom "Suosnivačica Black Lives Matter objašnjava zašto je ovo vrijeme drukčije", u kojem ova afroamerička aktivistkinja – koja je na Sveučilištu Arizona diplomirala povijest i magistrirala iz komunikacija i pravnog zagovaranja – tumači zbog čega su ovi prosvjedi različiti od onih iz 2013. godine.
"Iako vidimo da je barbarsko ubojstvo Georgea Floyda izazvalo puno bijesa i frustracije, također je jasno da značajnu ulogu u ovim prosvjedima ima i pandemija", kaže Tometi na početku intervjua, te obrazlaže:
"Imamo milijune ljudi koji su izgubili posao i podnijeli prijavu za nezaposlene, i vjerujem da su oni temeljito zabrinuti i očajni, jer vlada nema dostojanstven i sveobuhvatan plan djelovanja koji bi riješio suštinske brige prosječnog Amerikanca. Ljudi koji bi inače bili na poslu sada imaju vremena izići na prosvjed i razmisliti zašto se toliko bore. Prosvjednici kliču ime Georgea Floyda, ali mislim da su na ulicama prvenstveno zbog sebe i članova svoje obitelji, jer ne znaju tko je sljedeći, a zabrinuti su zbog ekonomske stvarnosti s kojom su suočeni", drži Tometi.
Dubinski problemi
Osnivačica pokreta BLM naglašava da su policijska brutalnost i rasizam samo najvidljiviji vršak dubinskih problema američkog društva:
"Apsolutno držim da su ljudi zabrinuti zbog policijske brutalnosti i rasizma koji je ugrađen u policijsko postupanje. Ali rekla bih da postoji i nešto u vezi s ekonomskim uvjetima života u Americi, što ove prosvjede čini drugačijim od ranijih vremena. Stoga smo mi u pokretu, osim na obranu od policijske agresije, pozvali američku vladu da uvede moratorij na rentu, hipoteke i komunalije. Stan, struja i voda spadaju u osnovne potrebe ljudi, a one su danas u Americi ugrožene", ocjenjuje ova aktivistkinja.
U nastavku razgovora Tometi je iznijela i zahtjev da se novac koji vlada namjerava uložiti u zapošljavanje novih policajaca preusmjeri u afroameričke zajednice.
"Kad je policija u New Yorku 2014. ubila Afroamerikanca Erica Garnera, na sličan način kako je sada ubijen Floyd, njujorške vlasti su objavile da će izdvojiti sto milijuna dolara za tisuću novih policajaca, kako bi bolje zaštitili našu zajednicu. Mi smo tada zaključili da policije ima čak i previše, i da našoj zajednici trebaju posve druge stvari. Nama su potrebni socijalni radnici i odgojitelji u školama. Voljeli bismo imati stručnjake za mentalno zdravlje kad imamo određene krize u našim zajednicama. Željeli bismo da postoje programi poslova za naše mlade tijekom ljeta. I zato kažemo: resurse koje namjeravate uložiti u policiju, uložite u crne zajednice!", kaže Tometi, te zaključuje:
"Već smo vidjeli masovnu nezaposlenost i vidjet ćemo još. Stoga su nam potrebni sveobuhvatni odgovori na pandemiju, koji se odnose i na zdravstvo i na ekonomiju."

Afroamerikanka Opal Tometi (36), rođena u SAD-u kao dijete imigranata iz Nigerije, postala je poznata širom Amerike kad je 2013. godine, skupa s Patrisse Cullors i Alicijom Garza, osnovala pokret "Black Lives Matter" (Crni životi su važni).
Povod za osnivanje pokreta bilo je mučko ubojstvo 17-godišnjeg afroameričkog tinejdžera Trayvona Martina, kojeg je 26. veljače 2012. u gradu Sanfordu na Floridi ubio bijelac George Zimmerman. Preciznije, pokret je osnovan nakon što je u srpnju 2013. Zimmerman na sudu oslobođen krivnje za ubojstvo Martina, jer je porota uvažila njegovu obranu da je pucao u samoobrani, premda su brojne indicije ukazivale da ga Martin ničim nije ugrožavao.
Ubojica Zimmerman bio je pripadnik tzv. "Građanske straže", neformalne bjelačke civilne skupine čiji članovi nadziru svoje četvrti te interveniraju u slučaju vandalizma i kriminala, obično na način da nazovu policiju kad u kvartu uoče nešto "sumnjivo". Pokojni Martin vraćao se iz trgovine noseći u vrećici slatkiše i ledeni čaj, te se Zimmermanu učinio "sumnjivim" pa ga je upucao iz neposredne blizine.
Istraga je pokazala da je Martin bio miran mladić, bez policijskog dosjea, za razliku od Zimmermana, koji je 2005. bio prijavljen policiji zbog nasilja nad zaručnicom (isti krimen ponovio je i 2013., samo dva mjeseca nakon što je oslobođen za ubojstvo Martina – tada je prijetio pištoljem vlastitoj supruzi i njezinu ocu). Pa ipak, sudska porota ga je oslobodila, što je bio signal afroameričkoj zajednici da pokrene velike prosvjede, čiji je rezultat bio osnivanje pokreta "Black Lives Matter".
Nezaposleni na ulicama
Sedam godina kasnije svoju "sumnjivost" na brutalan je način u Minneapolisu glavom platio i 46-godišnji Afroamerikanac George Floyd, što je bio povod za najveće prosvjede u Americi u zadnjih pola stoljeća, čime je i pokret "Black Lives Matter" ponovo došao u fokus.
Otuda je i list "The New Yorker" ovog tjedna objavio razgovor s Opal Tometi, pod naslovom "Suosnivačica Black Lives Matter objašnjava zašto je ovo vrijeme drukčije", u kojem ova afroamerička aktivistkinja – koja je na Sveučilištu Arizona diplomirala povijest i magistrirala iz komunikacija i pravnog zagovaranja – tumači zbog čega su ovi prosvjedi različiti od onih iz 2013. godine.
"Iako vidimo da je barbarsko ubojstvo Georgea Floyda izazvalo puno bijesa i frustracije, također je jasno da značajnu ulogu u ovim prosvjedima ima i pandemija", kaže Tometi na početku intervjua, te obrazlaže:
"Imamo milijune ljudi koji su izgubili posao i podnijeli prijavu za nezaposlene, i vjerujem da su oni temeljito zabrinuti i očajni, jer vlada nema dostojanstven i sveobuhvatan plan djelovanja koji bi riješio suštinske brige prosječnog Amerikanca. Ljudi koji bi inače bili na poslu sada imaju vremena izići na prosvjed i razmisliti zašto se toliko bore. Prosvjednici kliču ime Georgea Floyda, ali mislim da su na ulicama prvenstveno zbog sebe i članova svoje obitelji, jer ne znaju tko je sljedeći, a zabrinuti su zbog ekonomske stvarnosti s kojom su suočeni", drži Tometi.
Dubinski problemi
Osnivačica pokreta BLM naglašava da su policijska brutalnost i rasizam samo najvidljiviji vršak dubinskih problema američkog društva:
"Apsolutno držim da su ljudi zabrinuti zbog policijske brutalnosti i rasizma koji je ugrađen u policijsko postupanje. Ali rekla bih da postoji i nešto u vezi s ekonomskim uvjetima života u Americi, što ove prosvjede čini drugačijim od ranijih vremena. Stoga smo mi u pokretu, osim na obranu od policijske agresije, pozvali američku vladu da uvede moratorij na rentu, hipoteke i komunalije. Stan, struja i voda spadaju u osnovne potrebe ljudi, a one su danas u Americi ugrožene", ocjenjuje ova aktivistkinja.
U nastavku razgovora Tometi je iznijela i zahtjev da se novac koji vlada namjerava uložiti u zapošljavanje novih policajaca preusmjeri u afroameričke zajednice.
"Kad je policija u New Yorku 2014. ubila Afroamerikanca Erica Garnera, na sličan način kako je sada ubijen Floyd, njujorške vlasti su objavile da će izdvojiti sto milijuna dolara za tisuću novih policajaca, kako bi bolje zaštitili našu zajednicu. Mi smo tada zaključili da policije ima čak i previše, i da našoj zajednici trebaju posve druge stvari. Nama su potrebni socijalni radnici i odgojitelji u školama. Voljeli bismo imati stručnjake za mentalno zdravlje kad imamo određene krize u našim zajednicama. Željeli bismo da postoje programi poslova za naše mlade tijekom ljeta. I zato kažemo: resurse koje namjeravate uložiti u policiju, uložite u crne zajednice!", kaže Tometi, te zaključuje:
"Već smo vidjeli masovnu nezaposlenost i vidjet ćemo još. Stoga su nam potrebni sveobuhvatni odgovori na pandemiju, koji se odnose i na zdravstvo i na ekonomiju."
