Ovo je vrlo slično kao kraj jedne ere. U studenom 1989., kada je pao Berlinski zid, vjerovali smo da je stara podjela svijeta na Istok i Zapad samo povijest. Budući da je ideološki sukob između kapitalizma i komunizma nestao, postojao je osjećaj da smo u osnovi svi na istoj strani, napisao je BBC.

Nevolja je bila u tome što se za Vladimira Putina, nekadašnjeg časnika KGB-a sa sjedištem u Istočnoj Njemačkoj, činilo da se raspad starog Sovjetskog Saveza pretvorio u gorku osobnu ogorčenost koja je postajala sve gora kako su godine prolazile. Činjenica da se Ukrajina, nekada ključni dio SSSR-a, odvojila od Ruske Federacije bila je uvreda za sve u što je Putin vjerovao.

Nije važno što je Rusija potpisala međunarodni sporazum kojim prihvaća granice nove ukrajinske države. Do 2014. godine predsjednik Putin je uočio način preuzimanja Krima, najsimboličnijeg ruskog dijela Ukrajine, infiltriranjem svojih vojnika na poluotok.

Blokirali su ga, a nakon održavanja referenduma većinom etničkog ruskog stanovništva, on ga je zapravo pretvorio u dio ruske države. Bilo je to protivno međunarodnom pravu, ali Zapad se i dalje držao ideje da može poslovati s Putinovom Rusijom.

Bilo je govora i sankcija, ali ništa što je predsjednika Putina ili njegove suradnike natjeralo da se ozbiljno predomisli.

Isto se dogodilo kada su Putinovi neprijatelji, ili ljudi starog KGB-a i njegovog nasljednika FSB-a, koje se smatralo izdajnicima, otrovani, strijeljani ili na drugi način zbrinuti u Britaniji i Europi. Zapad je izdavao upozorenja i uveo nove sankcije, ali Putinova Rusija bila je spremna živjeti s njima.

U posljednjih 10 godina, Rusija je počela stvarati novi blok s Kinom - ne nužno neprijateljski nastrojen prema Zapadu, ali pružajući podršku jedna drugoj suočeni sa zapadnim kritikama.

Predsjednik Xi Jinping i predsjednik Putin stvorili su grupu za međusobnu podršku. Sada Kina odbija osuditi Rusiju zbog njezinih postupaka u Ukrajini, a ljudi na Tajvanu, otcijepljenom teritoriju za koji je Xi Jinping uvijek odbijao reći da neće izvršiti invaziju, počinju se pitati bi li na njih mogao doći red sljedeći.

Sve u svemu, dakle, svijet je puno više zabrinjavajuće mjesto nego prije nekoliko godina. Za usporedbu, stare hladnoratovske godine bile su daleko jednostavnije, a pravila su uglavnom bila puno jasnija - ako je jedna strana upala u prostor druge, postojala je uvijek prisutna prijetnja potpunog obostrano osiguranog uništenja. Dakle, to se nikada nije dogodilo, iako se rat više puta neugodno približio.

Ali nakon sloma komunizma, stara pravila su raskidana. Sada su granice tako nejasne da nitko ne zna gdje prolaze crvene linije.

Gledajući unazad, a toga ima sve više, neki političari i akademici govore da je NATO možda trebao promijeniti cijeli svoj pristup nakon rušenja Berlinskog zida - trebao je izbjeći ponižavanje Moskve.

Sama sugestija da bi se Ukrajina jednog dana mogla pridružiti NATO-u (iako se to oduvijek smatralo malo vjerojatnim) razbjesnila je Kremlj i pomogla je uvjeriti predsjednika Putina da se mora obračunati s Ukrajinom jednom zauvijek.

Svi znaju da je to njegova politika, i samo njegova. Različiti ruski političari, pa čak i neke vodeće vojne osobe, unaprijed su bili protiv svake invazije. Ali sada to mora uspjeti, a Rusija mora izaći kao čisti pobjednik.

Putin je uspio na Krimu, prije osam godina, a njegova je pozicija kod kuće znatno ojačana. Možda će opet uspjeti, probijajući se kroz ukrajinske oružane snage i ostvarujući neke značajne dobitke.

Savršeno je moguće. Ako ruski vojnici počnu umirati u znatnom broju i sankcije protiv Rusije počnu djelovati, tada će patiti i Putinova pozicija.

Što će onda učiniti? Odgovor je samo jedan - svaku domaću kritiku suzbit će još jače nego što već jest, u ime nacionalne sigurnosti. Rusija je čak i sada iznenađujuće otvoreno društvo u usporedbi s prošlošću.

Tome bi, sigurno, došao kraj. Rusko gospodarstvo bi pretrpjelo, a kineska pomoć ne bi nadoknadila gubitak.

Dakle, Vladimir Putin, koji je, čini se, započeo napad na Ukrajinu zbog svoje 30-godišnje ogorčenosti zbog raspada starog sovjetskog carstva, mogao bi Rusiju vratiti u dane SSSR-a.

A Zapad, koji se toliko dugo pokušava pretvarati da je Rusija samo još jedna zemlja s kojom možemo poslovati, mogao bi otkriti da su se stari dani vratili s osvetom, analizira BBC-jev urednik John Simpson.

Ovo je vrlo slično kao kraj jedne ere. U studenom 1989., kada je pao Berlinski zid, vjerovali smo da je stara podjela svijeta na Istok i Zapad samo povijest. Budući da je ideološki sukob između kapitalizma i komunizma nestao, postojao je osjećaj da smo u osnovi svi na istoj strani, napisao je BBC.

Nevolja je bila u tome što se za Vladimira Putina, nekadašnjeg časnika KGB-a sa sjedištem u Istočnoj Njemačkoj, činilo da se raspad starog Sovjetskog Saveza pretvorio u gorku osobnu ogorčenost koja je postajala sve gora kako su godine prolazile. Činjenica da se Ukrajina, nekada ključni dio SSSR-a, odvojila od Ruske Federacije bila je uvreda za sve u što je Putin vjerovao.

Nije važno što je Rusija potpisala međunarodni sporazum kojim prihvaća granice nove ukrajinske države. Do 2014. godine predsjednik Putin je uočio način preuzimanja Krima, najsimboličnijeg ruskog dijela Ukrajine, infiltriranjem svojih vojnika na poluotok.

Blokirali su ga, a nakon održavanja referenduma većinom etničkog ruskog stanovništva, on ga je zapravo pretvorio u dio ruske države. Bilo je to protivno međunarodnom pravu, ali Zapad se i dalje držao ideje da može poslovati s Putinovom Rusijom.

Bilo je govora i sankcija, ali ništa što je predsjednika Putina ili njegove suradnike natjeralo da se ozbiljno predomisli.

Isto se dogodilo kada su Putinovi neprijatelji, ili ljudi starog KGB-a i njegovog nasljednika FSB-a, koje se smatralo izdajnicima, otrovani, strijeljani ili na drugi način zbrinuti u Britaniji i Europi. Zapad je izdavao upozorenja i uveo nove sankcije, ali Putinova Rusija bila je spremna živjeti s njima.

U posljednjih 10 godina, Rusija je počela stvarati novi blok s Kinom - ne nužno neprijateljski nastrojen prema Zapadu, ali pružajući podršku jedna drugoj suočeni sa zapadnim kritikama.

Predsjednik Xi Jinping i predsjednik Putin stvorili su grupu za međusobnu podršku. Sada Kina odbija osuditi Rusiju zbog njezinih postupaka u Ukrajini, a ljudi na Tajvanu, otcijepljenom teritoriju za koji je Xi Jinping uvijek odbijao reći da neće izvršiti invaziju, počinju se pitati bi li na njih mogao doći red sljedeći.

Sve u svemu, dakle, svijet je puno više zabrinjavajuće mjesto nego prije nekoliko godina. Za usporedbu, stare hladnoratovske godine bile su daleko jednostavnije, a pravila su uglavnom bila puno jasnija - ako je jedna strana upala u prostor druge, postojala je uvijek prisutna prijetnja potpunog obostrano osiguranog uništenja. Dakle, to se nikada nije dogodilo, iako se rat više puta neugodno približio.

Ali nakon sloma komunizma, stara pravila su raskidana. Sada su granice tako nejasne da nitko ne zna gdje prolaze crvene linije.

Gledajući unazad, a toga ima sve više, neki političari i akademici govore da je NATO možda trebao promijeniti cijeli svoj pristup nakon rušenja Berlinskog zida - trebao je izbjeći ponižavanje Moskve.

Sama sugestija da bi se Ukrajina jednog dana mogla pridružiti NATO-u (iako se to oduvijek smatralo malo vjerojatnim) razbjesnila je Kremlj i pomogla je uvjeriti predsjednika Putina da se mora obračunati s Ukrajinom jednom zauvijek.

Svi znaju da je to njegova politika, i samo njegova. Različiti ruski političari, pa čak i neke vodeće vojne osobe, unaprijed su bili protiv svake invazije. Ali sada to mora uspjeti, a Rusija mora izaći kao čisti pobjednik.

Putin je uspio na Krimu, prije osam godina, a njegova je pozicija kod kuće znatno ojačana. Možda će opet uspjeti, probijajući se kroz ukrajinske oružane snage i ostvarujući neke značajne dobitke.

Savršeno je moguće. Ako ruski vojnici počnu umirati u znatnom broju i sankcije protiv Rusije počnu djelovati, tada će patiti i Putinova pozicija.

Što će onda učiniti? Odgovor je samo jedan - svaku domaću kritiku suzbit će još jače nego što već jest, u ime nacionalne sigurnosti. Rusija je čak i sada iznenađujuće otvoreno društvo u usporedbi s prošlošću.

Tome bi, sigurno, došao kraj. Rusko gospodarstvo bi pretrpjelo, a kineska pomoć ne bi nadoknadila gubitak.

Dakle, Vladimir Putin, koji je, čini se, započeo napad na Ukrajinu zbog svoje 30-godišnje ogorčenosti zbog raspada starog sovjetskog carstva, mogao bi Rusiju vratiti u dane SSSR-a.

A Zapad, koji se toliko dugo pokušava pretvarati da je Rusija samo još jedna zemlja s kojom možemo poslovati, mogao bi otkriti da su se stari dani vratili s osvetom, analizira BBC-jev urednik John Simpson.
