To je biljka koja je promijenila čovječanstvo. Zahvaljujući uzgoju pšenice, Homo sapiens se mogao prehraniti u sve većem broju, pretvarajući skupine lovaca skupljača koji se bore za preživljavanje u neprijateljskom svijetu u vladare planeta.

U tom procesu, vrsta divlje trave koja je nekoć bila ograničena na mali dio Bliskog istoka sada prekriva goleme dijelove Zemlje. Kao što je primijetio povjesničar Yuval Noah Harari: “U velikim ravnicama Sjeverne Amerike, gdje prije 10.000 godina nije rasla niti jedna stabljika pšenice, danas možete hodati stotine i stotine kilometara, a da ne naiđete ni na jednu drugu biljku.”

Pšenica sada daje 20 posto kalorija koje ljudi svakodnevno unose, ali je njena proizvodnja ugrožena. Zahvaljujući globalnom zagrijavanju izazvanom ljudskim djelovanjem, naš se planet suočava s budućnošću sve jačih toplinskih valova, suša i šumskih požara koji bi u budućnosti mogli uništiti žetvu, izazivajući raširenu glad.

Ali kriza bi se mogla izbjeći zahvaljujući izvanrednom istraživanju koje sada poduzimaju istraživači u Centru John Innes u Norwichu. Rade na projektu kako bi pšenicu učinili otpornijom na vrućinu i sušu. Takvi napori su se pokazali iznimno zahtjevnima, ali bit će predmet novog niza ispitivanja za nekoliko tjedana u sklopu projekta u kojem će se saditi sorte pšenice – djelomično stvorene tehnologijom uređivanja gena u terenskim ispitivanjima u Španjolskoj.

Pšenica nije bila jedini botanički agens koji je potaknuo poljoprivrednu revoluciju. Ostale osnovne namirnice, poput riže i krumpira, igrale su ulogu. Ali općenito se slaže da pšenica ima glavnu ulogu u pokretanju poljoprivredne revolucije koja je stvorila naš moderni svijet "eksplozije stanovništva i razmažene elite", kako to Harari kaže u svom međunarodnom bestseleru Sapiens.

Na farmama se uzgajaju dva glavna oblika pšenice: za tjesteninu i za kruh. Zajedno igraju ključnu ulogu u prehrani oko 4,5 milijardi ljudi, rekao je profesor Graham Moore, genetičar pšenice i direktor Centra John Innes, jednog od vodećih svjetskih instituta za istraživanje usjeva. “Od toga, oko 2,5 milijardi u 89 zemalja ovisi o pšenici za svoju svakodnevnu prehranu, tako da možete vidjeti koliko je usjev vitalno važan za svijet”, dodao je.

Problem s kojim su se suočili znanstvenici za usjeve, koji su nastojali poboljšati otpornost i produktivnost sorti pšenice, bila je složenost genetike pšenice, dodao je Moore. “Ljudska bića imaju jedan genom koji sadrži naše DNK upute. Ali pšenica za tjesteninu ima dva različita genoma predaka, dok pšenica za kruh ima tri.”

Ova složenost je imala važne posljedice. Kako bi kontrolirala njihove različite gene i kromosome, pšenica je dobila stabilizirajući gen koji odvaja različite kromosome u svojim različitim genomima. Time su ovi oblici pšenice osigurali visoke prinose. Međutim, gen također potiskuje bilo kakvu razmjenu kromosoma s divljim rođacima pšenice, frustrirajući napore genetičara koji pokušavaju stvoriti nove sorte s korisnim svojstvima.

“Divlji rođaci imaju stvarno korisne karakteristike – otpornost na bolesti, otpornost na sol, zaštitu od vrućine – osobine koje želite dodati kako bi pšenica bila robusnija i lakša za uzgoj u teškim uvjetima. Ali to niste mogli učiniti jer je ovaj gen spriječio asimilaciju ovih atributa.”

Bilo je potrebno nekoliko desetljeća, ali znanstvenici iz John Innes Centra sada su uspjeli u potrazi za svojim svetim gralom. Identificirali su ključni gen, označili ga Zip4.5B i stvorili njegovu mutiranu verziju, onu koja omogućuje genu da obavlja svoju glavnu funkciju – omogućiti pravilno uparivanje kromosoma pšenice i održavanje prinosa – ali kojoj nedostaje sposobnost blokiranja stvaranje novih varijanti s atributima divljih trava.

“Ključni alat u ovom radu bilo je uređivanje gena, što nam je omogućilo da napravimo precizne promjene u DNK pšenice. Bez toga bismo se još uvijek borili s ovim. To je učinilo ključnu razliku."

Znanstvenici Jones Innesa otkrili su da postoji najmanje 50 različitih verzija Zip4.5B. "Sada ćemo ih testirati na različitim sortama pšenice koje smo stvorili", dodao je Moore.

“Ovi će se zatim uzgajati u Španjolskoj, na zemlji u blizini Cordobe, da vidimo koliko dobro rade. Cilj će biti utvrditi koje će sorte najbolje preživjeti visoke temperature koje će naši poljoprivrednici iskusiti u narednim desetljećima.

“Pšenica je igrala izuzetnu ulogu u ljudskoj povijesti. Nadajmo se da će mu ovaj rad pomoći da zadrži svoju važnost kao prehrambene namirnice za budućnost.”

To je biljka koja je promijenila čovječanstvo. Zahvaljujući uzgoju pšenice, Homo sapiens se mogao prehraniti u sve većem broju, pretvarajući skupine lovaca skupljača koji se bore za preživljavanje u neprijateljskom svijetu u vladare planeta.

U tom procesu, vrsta divlje trave koja je nekoć bila ograničena na mali dio Bliskog istoka sada prekriva goleme dijelove Zemlje. Kao što je primijetio povjesničar Yuval Noah Harari: “U velikim ravnicama Sjeverne Amerike, gdje prije 10.000 godina nije rasla niti jedna stabljika pšenice, danas možete hodati stotine i stotine kilometara, a da ne naiđete ni na jednu drugu biljku.”

Pšenica sada daje 20 posto kalorija koje ljudi svakodnevno unose, ali je njena proizvodnja ugrožena. Zahvaljujući globalnom zagrijavanju izazvanom ljudskim djelovanjem, naš se planet suočava s budućnošću sve jačih toplinskih valova, suša i šumskih požara koji bi u budućnosti mogli uništiti žetvu, izazivajući raširenu glad.

Ali kriza bi se mogla izbjeći zahvaljujući izvanrednom istraživanju koje sada poduzimaju istraživači u Centru John Innes u Norwichu. Rade na projektu kako bi pšenicu učinili otpornijom na vrućinu i sušu. Takvi napori su se pokazali iznimno zahtjevnima, ali bit će predmet novog niza ispitivanja za nekoliko tjedana u sklopu projekta u kojem će se saditi sorte pšenice – djelomično stvorene tehnologijom uređivanja gena u terenskim ispitivanjima u Španjolskoj.

Sposobnost ovih sorti da izdrže vrućinu Iberije odredit će koliko će dobro znanstvenici za usjeve moći zaštititi buduće obradive farme od najgorih nepostojanosti klimatskih promjena i tako potaknuti proizvodnju hrane za milijarde ljudi na Zemlji, kaže tim Centra John Innes za Guardian.

Pšenica nije bila jedini botanički agens koji je potaknuo poljoprivrednu revoluciju. Ostale osnovne namirnice, poput riže i krumpira, igrale su ulogu. Ali općenito se slaže da pšenica ima glavnu ulogu u pokretanju poljoprivredne revolucije koja je stvorila naš moderni svijet "eksplozije stanovništva i razmažene elite", kako to Harari kaže u svom međunarodnom bestseleru Sapiens.

Na farmama se uzgajaju dva glavna oblika pšenice: za tjesteninu i za kruh. Zajedno igraju ključnu ulogu u prehrani oko 4,5 milijardi ljudi, rekao je profesor Graham Moore, genetičar pšenice i direktor Centra John Innes, jednog od vodećih svjetskih instituta za istraživanje usjeva. “Od toga, oko 2,5 milijardi u 89 zemalja ovisi o pšenici za svoju svakodnevnu prehranu, tako da možete vidjeti koliko je usjev vitalno važan za svijet”, dodao je.

Problem s kojim su se suočili znanstvenici za usjeve, koji su nastojali poboljšati otpornost i produktivnost sorti pšenice, bila je složenost genetike pšenice, dodao je Moore. “Ljudska bića imaju jedan genom koji sadrži naše DNK upute. Ali pšenica za tjesteninu ima dva različita genoma predaka, dok pšenica za kruh ima tri.”

Ova složenost je imala važne posljedice. Kako bi kontrolirala njihove različite gene i kromosome, pšenica je dobila stabilizirajući gen koji odvaja različite kromosome u svojim različitim genomima. Time su ovi oblici pšenice osigurali visoke prinose. Međutim, gen također potiskuje bilo kakvu razmjenu kromosoma s divljim rođacima pšenice, frustrirajući napore genetičara koji pokušavaju stvoriti nove sorte s korisnim svojstvima.

“Divlji rođaci imaju stvarno korisne karakteristike – otpornost na bolesti, otpornost na sol, zaštitu od vrućine – osobine koje želite dodati kako bi pšenica bila robusnija i lakša za uzgoj u teškim uvjetima. Ali to niste mogli učiniti jer je ovaj gen spriječio asimilaciju ovih atributa.”

Ovaj gen bio je poznat kao "sveti gral" genetičara za pšenicu, dodao je Moore. “Pšenica se – usprkos njezinoj kritičnoj važnosti za prehranjivanje svijeta – pokazala kao najteža od svih glavnih usjeva za proučavanje zbog složenosti i veličine njezina genoma. Otuda i važnost potrage za pronalaženjem gena koji je bio uzrok ovog problema.”

Bilo je potrebno nekoliko desetljeća, ali znanstvenici iz John Innes Centra sada su uspjeli u potrazi za svojim svetim gralom. Identificirali su ključni gen, označili ga Zip4.5B i stvorili njegovu mutiranu verziju, onu koja omogućuje genu da obavlja svoju glavnu funkciju – omogućiti pravilno uparivanje kromosoma pšenice i održavanje prinosa – ali kojoj nedostaje sposobnost blokiranja stvaranje novih varijanti s atributima divljih trava.

“Ključni alat u ovom radu bilo je uređivanje gena, što nam je omogućilo da napravimo precizne promjene u DNK pšenice. Bez toga bismo se još uvijek borili s ovim. To je učinilo ključnu razliku."

Znanstvenici Jones Innesa otkrili su da postoji najmanje 50 različitih verzija Zip4.5B. "Sada ćemo ih testirati na različitim sortama pšenice koje smo stvorili", dodao je Moore.

“Ovi će se zatim uzgajati u Španjolskoj, na zemlji u blizini Cordobe, da vidimo koliko dobro rade. Cilj će biti utvrditi koje će sorte najbolje preživjeti visoke temperature koje će naši poljoprivrednici iskusiti u narednim desetljećima.

“Pšenica je igrala izuzetnu ulogu u ljudskoj povijesti. Nadajmo se da će mu ovaj rad pomoći da zadrži svoju važnost kao prehrambene namirnice za budućnost.”
