Krakatau je nekoć bio maleni otočić vulkanskog podrijetla u Indoneziji. Cijeli otok uništila je erupcija vulkana 1883., a upravo ta eksplozija koja se dogodila 26. i 27. kolovoza, smatra se najrazornijom erupcijom ikad zabilježenom. Od cijelog otočja koje se nalazilo na tom području, preostao je samo Rakatu.

Duboka, potmula tutnjava počela se iz vulkana širiti već u svibnju, a brodovi koji su onuda prolazili izvještavali su o eksplozijama koje su bile toliko glasne da su nekim mornarima pucali bubnjići.

Procjenjuje se da je ta erupcija bila 13.000 puta jača od eksplozije atomskih bombi kakve su bačene na Nagasaki i Hirošimu. Pri erupciji je iz kratera vulkana izbačeno 25 kubičnih kilometara kamena, a kataklizmična eksplozija mogla se čuti u 3.600 kilometara udaljenom Alice Springsu prema istoku te na Mauricijusu koji je od vulkana udaljen 4.780 kilometara.

U toj erupciji, u kolovozu 1883. poginulo je preko 36.000 ljudi dok je još desetak tisuća teško ozlijeđen.

U zrak je odletjelo oko 19 prostornih kilometara vulkanskog materijala. Oblak prašine digao se 80 kilometara uvis, a potom je godinama kružio oko Zemlje, prouzročivši smanjenje ljetnih temperatura i spektakularne zalaske sunca diljem svijeta.

Valovi tsunamija su se dizali preko 40 metara kad se vulkan urušio, a uništeno je 163 sela uz obale Jave i Sumatre.

Otok se potpuno urušio i pretvorio u prašinu, a na mjestu nekadašnjeg Krakataua nastao je novi vulkan Anak (dijete) Krakatau.

Kad je Krakatau eruptirao, urušio se ispod površine mora i stvorio podvodnu kalderu, odnosno veliki vulkanski krater, širok 6,4 km. Godine 1927. oblak dima uzdigao se iz vode iznad kaldere, najavljujući nastajanje novog otoka. Do 1928. vulkanski otok Anak Krakatau nanovo je izbio na površinu. Novi period stalnih erupcija započeo je 1994.

U erupciji u prosincu 2018. Anak Krakatau je izazvao tsunami u kojem je poginulo 430 osoba, a tisuće su ozlijeđene.

U istoj erupciji izgubio je znatno na visini.

Krakatau je nekoć bio maleni otočić vulkanskog podrijetla u Indoneziji. Cijeli otok uništila je erupcija vulkana 1883., a upravo ta eksplozija koja se dogodila 26. i 27. kolovoza, smatra se najrazornijom erupcijom ikad zabilježenom. Od cijelog otočja koje se nalazilo na tom području, preostao je samo Rakatu.

Duboka, potmula tutnjava počela se iz vulkana širiti već u svibnju, a brodovi koji su onuda prolazili izvještavali su o eksplozijama koje su bile toliko glasne da su nekim mornarima pucali bubnjići.

Procjenjuje se da je ta erupcija bila 13.000 puta jača od eksplozije atomskih bombi kakve su bačene na Nagasaki i Hirošimu. Pri erupciji je iz kratera vulkana izbačeno 25 kubičnih kilometara kamena, a kataklizmična eksplozija mogla se čuti u 3.600 kilometara udaljenom Alice Springsu prema istoku te na Mauricijusu koji je od vulkana udaljen 4.780 kilometara.

U toj erupciji, u kolovozu 1883. poginulo je preko 36.000 ljudi dok je još desetak tisuća teško ozlijeđen.

U zrak je odletjelo oko 19 prostornih kilometara vulkanskog materijala. Oblak prašine digao se 80 kilometara uvis, a potom je godinama kružio oko Zemlje, prouzročivši smanjenje ljetnih temperatura i spektakularne zalaske sunca diljem svijeta.

Valovi tsunamija su se dizali preko 40 metara kad se vulkan urušio, a uništeno je 163 sela uz obale Jave i Sumatre.

Otok se potpuno urušio i pretvorio u prašinu, a na mjestu nekadašnjeg Krakataua nastao je novi vulkan Anak (dijete) Krakatau.

Kad je Krakatau eruptirao, urušio se ispod površine mora i stvorio podvodnu kalderu, odnosno veliki vulkanski krater, širok 6,4 km. Godine 1927. oblak dima uzdigao se iz vode iznad kaldere, najavljujući nastajanje novog otoka. Do 1928. vulkanski otok Anak Krakatau nanovo je izbio na površinu. Novi period stalnih erupcija započeo je 1994.

U erupciji u prosincu 2018. Anak Krakatau je izazvao tsunami u kojem je poginulo 430 osoba, a tisuće su ozlijeđene.

U istoj erupciji izgubio je znatno na visini.
