Snažan potres koji je pogodio Afganistan u srijedu rano ujutro usmrtio je najmanje 950 ljudi, a stotine su ozlijeđene, rekli su dužnosnici.

Potres je pogodio područje udaljeno oko 44 km od grada Kosta na jugoistoku zemlje.
Podrhtavanje se osjetilo u rasponu od oko 500 kilometara u Pakistanu, Afganistanu i Indiji, prema Europskom mediteranskom seizmološkom centru, prenosi Reuters.

"Nažalost, sinoć se dogodio jak potres u četiri okruga provincije Paktika, koji je ubio i ozlijedio stotine naših sunarodnjaka i uništio desetke kuća", tvitao je glasnogovornik vlade Bilal Karimi.
"Pozivamo sve humanitarne agencije da odmah pošalju timove u to područje kako bi spriječili daljnju katastrofu", dodao je.
Potres, koji se dogodio tijekom ranih jutarnjih sati dok su mnogi ljudi još spavali, bio je jakosti 6,1 stupanj po Richteru s epicentrom na dubini od oko 51 kilometar, navodi Američki geološki zavod.
