Ogroman asteroid, čija se veličina može usporediti s trenutno najvišom građevinom na Zemlji - Burj Khalifom, kreće se prema našem planetu i proći će pored njega sredinom prosinca, javlja NASA, a prenosi National Geographic. 

Ranija opažanja zvjezdarnice Arecibo u Puerto Ricu iz 2015. godine sugerirala su da bi asteroid mogao biti puno veći, odnosno dug najmanje 2 kilometra. Međutim, kasnija mjerenja NASA-e pokazala su da se radi o asteroidu promjera 791 m. Očekuje se da će asteroid 17. prosinca proletjeti pored Zemlje na udaljenosti od oko 5,4 milijuna kilometara brzinom od 5,6 km/s. Za usporedbu, udaljenost između Zemlje i Mjeseca je daleko manja od te - oko 385.000 km.

Unatoč tome što je klasificiran kao potencijalno opasan asteroid (PHA) zbog svoje veličine i prolaska u neposrednoj blizini Zemlje, malo je vjerojatno da će predstavljati prijetnju planetu. Zapravo, NASA je proglasila Zemlju sigurnom od udara asteroida u sljedećih 100 godina. Smatra se da asteroid pripada klasi Aton, što znači da se njegova putanja siječe sa Zemljinom putanjom oko Sunca. Kao takva, postoji teoretska šansa da jednog dana pogodi planet, no trenutni izračuni pokazuju da to za sada nije problem.

Međutim, ovaj asteroid – zbog svoje veličine – ima drugu vrijednost!

To bi moglo biti potencijalno mjesto za robotsku istraživačku misiju. Trenutno takva misija nije planirana, ali je teoretski moguća. NASA-in laboratorij  došao je do detaljnih proračuna za hipotetičku istraživačku misiju na asteroid. Prema tim izračunima, imao bi delta-v (mjeru različitih vrijednosti i faktora koji određuju koliko bi bilo teško pravilno manevrirati letjelicom tijekom polijetanja i/ili slijetanja) od 9.851 km/s.

Za usporedbu, radi se o delta-v za lansiranje rakete u nisku orbitu.

Istraživanje asteroida važno je polje u astronomiji, a mnoge svemirske agencije izrazile su interes za istraživanje mnogih velikih objekata u Sunčevom sustavu. U listopadu su Ujedinjeni Arapski Emirati objavili planove za novu istraživačku misiju asteroida i bili su prva arapska zemlja koja je uspješno sletjela letjelicom na asteroid. Lansiranje je zakazano za 2028. Tijekom tog razmišljanja UEA je planirala istražiti planet Veneru i sedam asteroida, a vrhunac misije bio bi spuštanje na jedan od njih. Asteroide mnogi vide kao moguće izvore za buduće rudarske operacije, jer bi mogli biti bogati sirovinama.

Ogroman asteroid, čija se veličina može usporediti s trenutno najvišom građevinom na Zemlji - Burj Khalifom, kreće se prema našem planetu i proći će pored njega sredinom prosinca, javlja NASA, a prenosi National Geographic. 

Ranija opažanja zvjezdarnice Arecibo u Puerto Ricu iz 2015. godine sugerirala su da bi asteroid mogao biti puno veći, odnosno dug najmanje 2 kilometra. Međutim, kasnija mjerenja NASA-e pokazala su da se radi o asteroidu promjera 791 m. Očekuje se da će asteroid 17. prosinca proletjeti pored Zemlje na udaljenosti od oko 5,4 milijuna kilometara brzinom od 5,6 km/s. Za usporedbu, udaljenost između Zemlje i Mjeseca je daleko manja od te - oko 385.000 km.

Unatoč tome što je klasificiran kao potencijalno opasan asteroid (PHA) zbog svoje veličine i prolaska u neposrednoj blizini Zemlje, malo je vjerojatno da će predstavljati prijetnju planetu. Zapravo, NASA je proglasila Zemlju sigurnom od udara asteroida u sljedećih 100 godina. Smatra se da asteroid pripada klasi Aton, što znači da se njegova putanja siječe sa Zemljinom putanjom oko Sunca. Kao takva, postoji teoretska šansa da jednog dana pogodi planet, no trenutni izračuni pokazuju da to za sada nije problem.

Međutim, ovaj asteroid – zbog svoje veličine – ima drugu vrijednost!

To bi moglo biti potencijalno mjesto za robotsku istraživačku misiju. Trenutno takva misija nije planirana, ali je teoretski moguća. NASA-in laboratorij  došao je do detaljnih proračuna za hipotetičku istraživačku misiju na asteroid. Prema tim izračunima, imao bi delta-v (mjeru različitih vrijednosti i faktora koji određuju koliko bi bilo teško pravilno manevrirati letjelicom tijekom polijetanja i/ili slijetanja) od 9.851 km/s.

Za usporedbu, radi se o delta-v za lansiranje rakete u nisku orbitu.

Istraživanje asteroida važno je polje u astronomiji, a mnoge svemirske agencije izrazile su interes za istraživanje mnogih velikih objekata u Sunčevom sustavu. U listopadu su Ujedinjeni Arapski Emirati objavili planove za novu istraživačku misiju asteroida i bili su prva arapska zemlja koja je uspješno sletjela letjelicom na asteroid. Lansiranje je zakazano za 2028. Tijekom tog razmišljanja UEA je planirala istražiti planet Veneru i sedam asteroida, a vrhunac misije bio bi spuštanje na jedan od njih. Asteroide mnogi vide kao moguće izvore za buduće rudarske operacije, jer bi mogli biti bogati sirovinama.

Ogroman asteroid, čija se veličina može usporediti s trenutno najvišom građevinom na Zemlji - Burj Khalifom, kreće se prema našem planetu i proći će pored njega sredinom prosinca, javlja NASA, a prenosi National Geographic. 

Ranija opažanja zvjezdarnice Arecibo u Puerto Ricu iz 2015. godine sugerirala su da bi asteroid mogao biti puno veći, odnosno dug najmanje 2 kilometra. Međutim, kasnija mjerenja NASA-e pokazala su da se radi o asteroidu promjera 791 m. Očekuje se da će asteroid 17. prosinca proletjeti pored Zemlje na udaljenosti od oko 5,4 milijuna kilometara brzinom od 5,6 km/s. Za usporedbu, udaljenost između Zemlje i Mjeseca je daleko manja od te - oko 385.000 km.
