Već nekoliko desetljeća indeks tjelesne mase, premda nije savršena mjera, vrlo često je upotrebljavan kao okvirni pokazatelj debljine i pretilosti, odnosno približno mjerilo idealne težine.

Iako je koristan, taj indeks, koji je vrlo lako izračunati tako da se broj kilograma podijeli s kvadratom visine u metrima, ne uzima u obzir povećanu debljinu oko abdomena, pa stručnjaci preporučuju da se mjeri opseg struka.

Ljude bi trebalo ohrabriti da mjere struk kako bi provjerili imaju li previše opasnih naslaga masti oko tog srednjeg dijela tijela.

Opseg struka odraslih osoba trebao bi biti manji od polovice njihove visine kako bi se izbjegli zdravstveni rizici, preporučuje britanski institut NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Exellence) koji nudi nacionalne smjernice i savjete za unaprjeđenje zdravlja i socijalne skrbi.

Dr. Paul Chrisp iz NICE-a kaže kako su osvježene smjernice jednostavan i efikasan način da ljudi nadgledaju svoje zdravlje. Svi mogu jednostavno izmjeriti opseg struka, interpretirati rezultate i potražiti savjet ako su u zoni povećanog rizika.

A višak masnog tkiva na području struka povećava rizik za dijabetes tipa 2, visoki krvni tlak, srčana oboljenja, moždani udar...

Dno rebara i vrh kukova

Stručnjaci iz NICE-a upozoravaju kako čak i osobe koje imaju zdrav indeks tjelesne mase mogu imati višak oko struka. Poručili su kako ljudima treba objasniti da bi za pravilno mjerenje opsega struka treba pronaći dno rebara i vrh kukova, te izmjeriti struk na sredini između tih točaka.

Primjerice, osoba visoka 175 centimetara trebala bi imati opseg struka manji od 87,5 centimetara. Usporedba opsega struka s visinom koristi se za oba spola, ali nije precizna za osobe s indeksom tjelesne mase iznad 35, trudnice i djecu mlađu od dvije godine.

Neki stručnjaci dodaju kako mjerenje struka ne igra ulogu kod osoba koje su vrlo niske ili osoba starijih od 60 godina koje su možda starenjem izgubile nešto na visini.

Prof. Naveed Sattar sa Sveučilišta Glasgow kaže kako nije sigurno da će se ove nove preporuke "uhvatiti", ali naglašava da ne može škoditi na nove načine natjerati ljude da razmišljaju o svom zdravlju.

Prof. Rachel Batterham, konzultantica za pretilost, dijabetes i endokrinologiju, kaže kako je usporedba opsega struka i visine jednostavna mjera za identificiranje ljudi čije je zdravlje pod povećanim rizikom.

Svi imamo metar

A izmjeriti opseg struka zaista nije problem, svi kod kuće zasigurno imamo metar, čak i ako nemamo, obiteljski liječnik može obaviti to mjerenje.

Nove britanske smjernice liječnicima preporučuju da razmotre korištenje omjera opsega struka i visine kod djece i mladih starijih od pet godina kako bi procijenili potencijalne rizike za njihovo zdravlje.

Tijekom pandemije koronavirusa u Engleskoj, koja zasigurno nije jedina zemlja s takvom situacijom, zabilježen je značajan rast pretilosti kod djece.

Najbolji način za borbu protiv viška kilograma je uravnotežena prehrana i kontrola unosa kalorija, polagano jedenje i izbjegavanje situacija koje mogu izazvati prejedanje, te neki oblik fizičke aktivnosti dva i pol do pet sati tjedno, a uvijek je dobro potražiti pomoć stručnjaka ili grupe za potporu.

Već nekoliko desetljeća indeks tjelesne mase, premda nije savršena mjera, vrlo često je upotrebljavan kao okvirni pokazatelj debljine i pretilosti, odnosno približno mjerilo idealne težine.

Iako je koristan, taj indeks, koji je vrlo lako izračunati tako da se broj kilograma podijeli s kvadratom visine u metrima, ne uzima u obzir povećanu debljinu oko abdomena, pa stručnjaci preporučuju da se mjeri opseg struka.

Ljude bi trebalo ohrabriti da mjere struk kako bi provjerili imaju li previše opasnih naslaga masti oko tog srednjeg dijela tijela.

Opseg struka odraslih osoba trebao bi biti manji od polovice njihove visine kako bi se izbjegli zdravstveni rizici, preporučuje britanski institut NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Exellence) koji nudi nacionalne smjernice i savjete za unaprjeđenje zdravlja i socijalne skrbi.

Dr. Paul Chrisp iz NICE-a kaže kako su osvježene smjernice jednostavan i efikasan način da ljudi nadgledaju svoje zdravlje. Svi mogu jednostavno izmjeriti opseg struka, interpretirati rezultate i potražiti savjet ako su u zoni povećanog rizika.

A višak masnog tkiva na području struka povećava rizik za dijabetes tipa 2, visoki krvni tlak, srčana oboljenja, moždani udar...

Dno rebara i vrh kukova

Stručnjaci iz NICE-a upozoravaju kako čak i osobe koje imaju zdrav indeks tjelesne mase mogu imati višak oko struka. Poručili su kako ljudima treba objasniti da bi za pravilno mjerenje opsega struka treba pronaći dno rebara i vrh kukova, te izmjeriti struk na sredini između tih točaka.

Primjerice, osoba visoka 175 centimetara trebala bi imati opseg struka manji od 87,5 centimetara. Usporedba opsega struka s visinom koristi se za oba spola, ali nije precizna za osobe s indeksom tjelesne mase iznad 35, trudnice i djecu mlađu od dvije godine.

Neki stručnjaci dodaju kako mjerenje struka ne igra ulogu kod osoba koje su vrlo niske ili osoba starijih od 60 godina koje su možda starenjem izgubile nešto na visini.

Prof. Naveed Sattar sa Sveučilišta Glasgow kaže kako nije sigurno da će se ove nove preporuke "uhvatiti", ali naglašava da ne može škoditi na nove načine natjerati ljude da razmišljaju o svom zdravlju.

Prof. Rachel Batterham, konzultantica za pretilost, dijabetes i endokrinologiju, kaže kako je usporedba opsega struka i visine jednostavna mjera za identificiranje ljudi čije je zdravlje pod povećanim rizikom.

Svi imamo metar

A izmjeriti opseg struka zaista nije problem, svi kod kuće zasigurno imamo metar, čak i ako nemamo, obiteljski liječnik može obaviti to mjerenje.

Nove britanske smjernice liječnicima preporučuju da razmotre korištenje omjera opsega struka i visine kod djece i mladih starijih od pet godina kako bi procijenili potencijalne rizike za njihovo zdravlje.

Tijekom pandemije koronavirusa u Engleskoj, koja zasigurno nije jedina zemlja s takvom situacijom, zabilježen je značajan rast pretilosti kod djece.

Pretilost utječe i na kvalitetu života i može dovesti do psiholoških problema poput depresije i manjka samopouzdanja.

Najbolji način za borbu protiv viška kilograma je uravnotežena prehrana i kontrola unosa kalorija, polagano jedenje i izbjegavanje situacija koje mogu izazvati prejedanje, te neki oblik fizičke aktivnosti dva i pol do pet sati tjedno, a uvijek je dobro potražiti pomoć stručnjaka ili grupe za potporu.
