Ujutro 21. studenog 1916. britanski prekooceanski brod Britannic, tada, tijekom Prvog svjetskog rata, bolnički brod — krstario je Egejskim morem. Otputovao je na krvavo bojište Galipolje u Turskoj. Medicinska sestra Violet Jessop upravo je došla s jutarnje mise i sjela doručkovati kad je prigušena eksplozija zatresla brod. Britannic je naišao na njemačku minu i brzo je tonuo, piše National Geographic.

Iako su izdane naredbe da se ukrcaju u čamce za spašavanje, Jessop je otrčala u svoju kabinu kako bi pokupila nekoliko dragocjenosti, uključujući molitvenik i jedan poseban predmet za osobnu njegu. U svojim se memoarima prisjetila riječi prijateljice: "Nikada ništa ne radite, a da prethodno ne provjerite svoju četkicu za zube."

Jessop je taj savjet ozbiljno shvatila zbog svog prethodnog iskustva s pomorskim katastrofama, uključujući potonuće Titanica 1912. godine.

Zapamćena kao "Kraljica brodova koji tonu" i "Gospođica nepotopiva", Jessop se oslanjala na svoju duboku vjeru i snažnu volju kada su je zadesile ove katastrofe na moru. Unatoč suočavanju sa smrću na Britannici, neukrotiva Jessop nastavila je služiti na prekooceanskim brodovima do svog umirovljenja.

"Trebao joj je posao i život na moru bio je sve što je znala", kaže autor i stručnjak za Britannicu Simon Mills. “Kasnije je napisala da se mora što prije vratiti na posao, prije nego što izgubi živce, pa se nedugo nakon vratila na more.”

Rođena u Argentini 1887., Violet Constance Jessop bila je kći irskih katoličkih imigranata koji su se preselili u Južnu Ameriku i postali uzgajivači ovaca. Bila je boležljivo dijete. Bolovala je od tifusa i tuberkuloze od kojih je skoro umrla. Njezin oporavak bio je čudesan.

“Violetina tvrdoglava i žestoka volja za životom izliječila ju je”, napisao je pokojni John Maxton-Graham, urednik njezinih memoara.

Nakon što joj je otac umro 1903., 16-godišnja Jessop se s obitelji preselila u Englesku. Kako bi uzdržavala djecu, majka Catherine postala je stjuardesa na parobrodima Royal Mail Line koji su plovili preko Atlantika.

Nakon pet godina na moru, Catherine se razboljela i Violet, koja je imala 21 godinu, postala je jedina koja je mogla prehraniti obitelj. Krenula je majčinim stopama i postala stjuardesa. Iako je prema tadašnjim standardima bila premlada za to mjesto, njezina ljubaznost i poznavanje jezika - govorila je engleski, španjolski i francuski - pomogli su joj da dobije posao.

Godine 1911. mlada stjuardesa potpisala je ugovor s brodom RMS Olympic — najvećim u to vrijeme i prvim od tri luksuzna broda kojima upravlja White Star Line.

Sve je išlo dobro do 20. rujna 1911. kada se putnički brod sudario s britanskim kruzerom. Olimpik je pretrpio velika oštećenja, ali se uspio vratiti u Englesku.

Olympic je otišao na popravak, a Jessop je prebačena na svoj sestrinski brod, RMS Titanic. Oko sedam mjeseci kasnije, 14. travnja 1912., elegantni brod udario je u santu leda četvrtog dana svog prvog putovanja i potonuo. Poginulo je više od 1500 putnika i članova posade.

U 23.40 te strašne noći, Jessop je upravo završila s molitvama i bila je u krevetu kada je čula "zvuk pucketanja, škripanja, kidanja". Prvo je pomislila da se radi o nekakvoj vježbi. Uostalom, "nepotopivi" Titanic nikako nije mogao biti u opasnosti od potapanja. Ali manje od tri sata kasnije Jessop je sjedila u čamcu za spašavanje i užasnuto gledala kako veliki brod nestaje ispod mračnog, hladnog Atlantika. "Sigurno je sve ovo samo san", prisjetila se kako je pomislila.

Kad je 1914. godine izbio Veliki rat, Jessop se dobrovoljno prijavila da služi kao medicinska sestra. Neko je vrijeme radila u kopnenim bolnicama, a onda je dobila priliku služiti na moru na Britannici. Godine 1916. brod je naletio na minu u blizini grčkog otoka Kea. Jessop je bila u čamcu za spašavanje kada je uvučena u Britannicove propelere koji su još radili. Voda je postala crvena od krvi dok su propeleri sasjekli ljude i čamac na komade.

Jessop je skočio u more i tako izbjegla smrt. Zadobila je težak prijelom lubanje i duboku posjekotinu na nozi. Kasnije, kad je ugledala poznata lica na čamcu za spašavanje - dva liječnika pored kojih je kleknula na misi ranije tog jutra - jedan je rekao: "Znam što te danas spasilo, mlada damo."

Violettin oporavak trajao je tri godine. Tijekom tog vremena rat je završio, a prekooceanski brodovi nastavili su prelaziti Atlantik. Tri preživjela brodoloma mogla bi zabrinuti neke, ali ne i Violet Jessop. Godine 1920. ponovno je potpisala ugovor s popravljenim Olympicom i nastavila raditi kao stjuardesa do umirovljenja 1950. godine. Umrla je u Engleskoj 1971., u 83. godini života, piše National Geographic.

Što joj je dalo hrabrosti da prebrodi sve što joj je život priredio? “Samo volja za životom”, rekla je prijateljici. "I velika vjera u Boga".

Ujutro 21. studenog 1916. britanski prekooceanski brod Britannic, tada, tijekom Prvog svjetskog rata, bolnički brod — krstario je Egejskim morem. Otputovao je na krvavo bojište Galipolje u Turskoj. Medicinska sestra Violet Jessop upravo je došla s jutarnje mise i sjela doručkovati kad je prigušena eksplozija zatresla brod. Britannic je naišao na njemačku minu i brzo je tonuo, piše National Geographic.

Iako su izdane naredbe da se ukrcaju u čamce za spašavanje, Jessop je otrčala u svoju kabinu kako bi pokupila nekoliko dragocjenosti, uključujući molitvenik i jedan poseban predmet za osobnu njegu. U svojim se memoarima prisjetila riječi prijateljice: "Nikada ništa ne radite, a da prethodno ne provjerite svoju četkicu za zube."

Jessop je taj savjet ozbiljno shvatila zbog svog prethodnog iskustva s pomorskim katastrofama, uključujući potonuće Titanica 1912. godine.

Zapamćena kao "Kraljica brodova koji tonu" i "Gospođica nepotopiva", Jessop se oslanjala na svoju duboku vjeru i snažnu volju kada su je zadesile ove katastrofe na moru. Unatoč suočavanju sa smrću na Britannici, neukrotiva Jessop nastavila je služiti na prekooceanskim brodovima do svog umirovljenja.

"Trebao joj je posao i život na moru bio je sve što je znala", kaže autor i stručnjak za Britannicu Simon Mills. “Kasnije je napisala da se mora što prije vratiti na posao, prije nego što izgubi živce, pa se nedugo nakon vratila na more.”

Rođena u Argentini 1887., Violet Constance Jessop bila je kći irskih katoličkih imigranata koji su se preselili u Južnu Ameriku i postali uzgajivači ovaca. Bila je boležljivo dijete. Bolovala je od tifusa i tuberkuloze od kojih je skoro umrla. Njezin oporavak bio je čudesan.

“Violetina tvrdoglava i žestoka volja za životom izliječila ju je”, napisao je pokojni John Maxton-Graham, urednik njezinih memoara.

Nakon što joj je otac umro 1903., 16-godišnja Jessop se s obitelji preselila u Englesku. Kako bi uzdržavala djecu, majka Catherine postala je stjuardesa na parobrodima Royal Mail Line koji su plovili preko Atlantika.

Nakon pet godina na moru, Catherine se razboljela i Violet, koja je imala 21 godinu, postala je jedina koja je mogla prehraniti obitelj. Krenula je majčinim stopama i postala stjuardesa. Iako je prema tadašnjim standardima bila premlada za to mjesto, njezina ljubaznost i poznavanje jezika - govorila je engleski, španjolski i francuski - pomogli su joj da dobije posao.

Godine 1911. mlada stjuardesa potpisala je ugovor s brodom RMS Olympic — najvećim u to vrijeme i prvim od tri luksuzna broda kojima upravlja White Star Line.

Sve je išlo dobro do 20. rujna 1911. kada se putnički brod sudario s britanskim kruzerom. Olimpik je pretrpio velika oštećenja, ali se uspio vratiti u Englesku.

Olympic je otišao na popravak, a Jessop je prebačena na svoj sestrinski brod, RMS Titanic. Oko sedam mjeseci kasnije, 14. travnja 1912., elegantni brod udario je u santu leda četvrtog dana svog prvog putovanja i potonuo. Poginulo je više od 1500 putnika i članova posade.

U 23.40 te strašne noći, Jessop je upravo završila s molitvama i bila je u krevetu kada je čula "zvuk pucketanja, škripanja, kidanja". Prvo je pomislila da se radi o nekakvoj vježbi. Uostalom, "nepotopivi" Titanic nikako nije mogao biti u opasnosti od potapanja. Ali manje od tri sata kasnije Jessop je sjedila u čamcu za spašavanje i užasnuto gledala kako veliki brod nestaje ispod mračnog, hladnog Atlantika. "Sigurno je sve ovo samo san", prisjetila se kako je pomislila.

Kad je 1914. godine izbio Veliki rat, Jessop se dobrovoljno prijavila da služi kao medicinska sestra. Neko je vrijeme radila u kopnenim bolnicama, a onda je dobila priliku služiti na moru na Britannici. Godine 1916. brod je naletio na minu u blizini grčkog otoka Kea. Jessop je bila u čamcu za spašavanje kada je uvučena u Britannicove propelere koji su još radili. Voda je postala crvena od krvi dok su propeleri sasjekli ljude i čamac na komade.

Jessop je skočio u more i tako izbjegla smrt. Zadobila je težak prijelom lubanje i duboku posjekotinu na nozi. Kasnije, kad je ugledala poznata lica na čamcu za spašavanje - dva liječnika pored kojih je kleknula na misi ranije tog jutra - jedan je rekao: "Znam što te danas spasilo, mlada damo."

Violettin oporavak trajao je tri godine. Tijekom tog vremena rat je završio, a prekooceanski brodovi nastavili su prelaziti Atlantik. Tri preživjela brodoloma mogla bi zabrinuti neke, ali ne i Violet Jessop. Godine 1920. ponovno je potpisala ugovor s popravljenim Olympicom i nastavila raditi kao stjuardesa do umirovljenja 1950. godine. Umrla je u Engleskoj 1971., u 83. godini života, piše National Geographic.

Što joj je dalo hrabrosti da prebrodi sve što joj je život priredio? “Samo volja za životom”, rekla je prijateljici. "I velika vjera u Boga".
