Osamdesetogodišnji Francois Le Maistre jedan je od posljednjih izvornih govornika džerzijskog, drevnog jezika Jerseyja, najvećeg otoka u skupini Kanalskih otoka u La Mancheu, samo koju minutu udaljenog od francuske obale.
"Mi smo posljednja generacija koja ga govori prirodno", kazao je AFP-u. "Tako je tužno kad izgubite samu srž svoje kulture".
Samo 22 kilometra od francuske obale, Jersey je samoupravni britanski otok, kojeg međunarodno predstavlja vlada u Londonu.
Zbog dominacije engleskog, sve je manje otočana koji govore mjesnim jezikom nastalim pod utjecajem francuskog.
Jèrriais ili jerseyski (džerzijski) jezik) postoji više od tisuću godina i oblik je normanskog, odnosno korijeni su mu u obližnjoj Normandiji u sjevernoj Francuskoj.
Jezik seljaka
Le Maistre i njegov 77-godišnji brat sjede za stolom u selu Saint Ouenu i prisjećaju se kako "u kući nisu govorili ništa drugo".
Ali se džerzijski smatrao "seljačkim jezikom" i učitelji su čak djecu kažnjavali što ga koriste, kaže Jean.
Čak i njih dvojica uglavnom govore engleski, kao i golema većina od 100.000 stanovnika Jerseyja, što je odraz preobrazbe otoka nakon Drugog svjetskog rata iz ruralne zajednice u turističko odredište i porezni raj.
Isto se dogodilo sličnom, ali posebnom jeziku na obližnjem otoku Guernseyju.
Ali danas se stavovi mijenjaju i sve se više truda ulaže u očuvanje i oživljenje jezika.
Godine 2019. otočne su vlasti proglasile džerzijski službenim jezikom uz engleski i francuski i vlada sada podupire njegovo učenje u školama.
Entuzijasti se nadaju da će Jersey slijediti primjer još jednog krunskog britanskog posjeda, otoka Mana u IrskomE moru, koji je obnovio svoj mjesni jezik manks iako je 1974. proglašen izumrlim.
"S mnogo ulaganja, s mnogo uloženog truda i vremena, oni su ga revitalizirali... pa se i mi nadamo", kaže Susan Parker, jedna od sedam učiteljica džerzijskog na Jerseyju.
Škole na Jerseyju počele su prošle godine intergrirati džerijski u školski kurikulum i učitelji se trude učiti djecu o njihovu kulturnom nasljeđu čak i ako je malo vjerojatno da će jezik govoriti kod kuće.
Moderno doba
Po zadnjem istraživanju, manje od jedan posto stanovnika Jerseyja tečno govori džerzijski, dok ih 27 posto zna neke riječi ili fraze.
"Gubimo govornike među starijima brže nego što ih dobivamo među mladima", upozorava lingvist i učitelj Geraint Jennings, jedan od promotora kulturnog nasljeđa Jerseyja.
Jezik izaziva interes i među mlađima kakav je 21-godišnji student Atticus Mawby. "Ako džerzijski izumre, Jersey će postati samo još jedan dio Britanije. A to bi bilo prokleto tužno", rekao je.
"Mislim da nam je ovo najbolja šansa da naše neovisno nasljeđe održimo na životu".
Kako bi unaprijedio svoje znanje Mawby se uključio u konverzacijske radionice koje Jennings vodi pet puta tjedno.
Zasad se francuski mnogo više i čuje jer bio zakonodavni jezik mnogo godina.
Trenutno je jedini medij na džerzijskom petominutni radijski program BBC-ja jednom tjedno.
"Pomoglo bi da imamo filmove na džerzijskom, da imamo kino, takve stvari", kaže Mawby, sudjelujući u konverzacijskoj grupi u mjesnom muzeju sa sudionicima od 20 do 80 godina.
Neki uče brojeve bacajući kockice, drugi razgovaraju različitom razinom tečnosti.
Kad nešto zaborave, mogu to pogledati na internetu. A to je novi izazov; kako tradicionalni jezik osuvremeniti riječima modernog doba.

Osamdesetogodišnji Francois Le Maistre jedan je od posljednjih izvornih govornika džerzijskog, drevnog jezika Jerseyja, najvećeg otoka u skupini Kanalskih otoka u La Mancheu, samo koju minutu udaljenog od francuske obale.
"Mi smo posljednja generacija koja ga govori prirodno", kazao je AFP-u. "Tako je tužno kad izgubite samu srž svoje kulture".
Samo 22 kilometra od francuske obale, Jersey je samoupravni britanski otok, kojeg međunarodno predstavlja vlada u Londonu.
Zbog dominacije engleskog, sve je manje otočana koji govore mjesnim jezikom nastalim pod utjecajem francuskog.
Jèrriais ili jerseyski (džerzijski) jezik) postoji više od tisuću godina i oblik je normanskog, odnosno korijeni su mu u obližnjoj Normandiji u sjevernoj Francuskoj.

Le Maistre i njegov 77-godišnji brat sjede za stolom u selu Saint Ouenu i prisjećaju se kako "u kući nisu govorili ništa drugo".
Ali se džerzijski smatrao "seljačkim jezikom" i učitelji su čak djecu kažnjavali što ga koriste, kaže Jean.
Čak i njih dvojica uglavnom govore engleski, kao i golema većina od 100.000 stanovnika Jerseyja, što je odraz preobrazbe otoka nakon Drugog svjetskog rata iz ruralne zajednice u turističko odredište i porezni raj.
Isto se dogodilo sličnom, ali posebnom jeziku na obližnjem otoku Guernseyju.
Ali danas se stavovi mijenjaju i sve se više truda ulaže u očuvanje i oživljenje jezika.
Godine 2019. otočne su vlasti proglasile džerzijski službenim jezikom uz engleski i francuski i vlada sada podupire njegovo učenje u školama.
Entuzijasti se nadaju da će Jersey slijediti primjer još jednog krunskog britanskog posjeda, otoka Mana u IrskomE moru, koji je obnovio svoj mjesni jezik manks iako je 1974. proglašen izumrlim.
"S mnogo ulaganja, s mnogo uloženog truda i vremena, oni su ga revitalizirali... pa se i mi nadamo", kaže Susan Parker, jedna od sedam učiteljica džerzijskog na Jerseyju.
Škole na Jerseyju počele su prošle godine intergrirati džerijski u školski kurikulum i učitelji se trude učiti djecu o njihovu kulturnom nasljeđu čak i ako je malo vjerojatno da će jezik govoriti kod kuće.
Moderno doba
Po zadnjem istraživanju, manje od jedan posto stanovnika Jerseyja tečno govori džerzijski, dok ih 27 posto zna neke riječi ili fraze.
"Gubimo govornike među starijima brže nego što ih dobivamo među mladima", upozorava lingvist i učitelj Geraint Jennings, jedan od promotora kulturnog nasljeđa Jerseyja.
Jezik izaziva interes i među mlađima kakav je 21-godišnji student Atticus Mawby. "Ako džerzijski izumre, Jersey će postati samo još jedan dio Britanije. A to bi bilo prokleto tužno", rekao je.
"Mislim da nam je ovo najbolja šansa da naše neovisno nasljeđe održimo na životu".
Kako bi unaprijedio svoje znanje Mawby se uključio u konverzacijske radionice koje Jennings vodi pet puta tjedno.
Zasad se francuski mnogo više i čuje jer bio zakonodavni jezik mnogo godina.
Trenutno je jedini medij na džerzijskom petominutni radijski program BBC-ja jednom tjedno.
"Pomoglo bi da imamo filmove na džerzijskom, da imamo kino, takve stvari", kaže Mawby, sudjelujući u konverzacijskoj grupi u mjesnom muzeju sa sudionicima od 20 do 80 godina.
Neki uče brojeve bacajući kockice, drugi razgovaraju različitom razinom tečnosti.
Kad nešto zaborave, mogu to pogledati na internetu. A to je novi izazov; kako tradicionalni jezik osuvremeniti riječima modernog doba.
