U siječnju 2017. jedan prikaz zaključio sam ovim riječima: „Na koncu, dopustite mi malo prostodušne čitateljske euforije: 'Ispovijedam' Jaumea Cabréa autentično je remek-djelo!“

Pretpostavljam da možete naslutiti s kakvom sam radošću četiri i pol godine kasnije dočekao izlazak „Eunuhove sjene“, nove knjige pisca koji me izbacio iz cipela (ovo „nove“ shvatite relativno, jer se radi o libru izvorno objavljenom 1996., dakle prije „Glasova Pamana“ iz 2004. i „Ispovjedam“ iz 2011., dvaju romana koji su kod nas već prevedeni).

Na izmaku petoljetke ispunjene žudnjom za Cabréovom novom knjigom (pa makar bila i stara), libar je osvanuo na mom kantunalu, i to u prijevodu Borisa Dumančića koji je odradio maestralan posao s dvjema prethodnim romanima katalonskog meštra.

Sve je bilo spremno za puno sati (jer radi se o autoru koji piše odeblje libre) čitalačkog užitka koji je, međutim, na neku čudnu foru, ovom prilikom izostao. Da ne bude nikakve zabune, „Eunuhova sjena“ vrlo je dobar roman, ali samo zato što pisac njegova talenta i kad ponudi rukopis ispod svoje poslovično visoke razine još uvijek za cijelu glavu nadmašuje konkurenciju.

Što je, dakle, u ovom slučaju pošlo krivo? Naoko ništa. Jaume Cabré i ovdje je onaj stari, poznati, voljeni.

Tko se imao prilike susresti s njegovom literaturom, vrlo dobro zna kako se radi o piscu s viškom priča u rukavu, koji „malim“, osobnim storijama rado kontrapunktira one „velike“, društvene odnosno povijesne, koji voli pripovjedne digresije i raspolaže rijetkom, skoro pa čarobnom vještinom da se uvijek iznova s lakoćom vrati natrag u glavno narativno korito, pritom nimalo ne zbunjujući čitatelja.

Cabré se k tome voli poigravati pripovjednim perspektivama. Ne'š ti njega, mogao bi mi sada prigovoriti poneki brzopleti čitatelj, pa i osrednji ili čak slabi pisci znaju kako se mogu izmjenjivati narativna očišta.

Da, naravno, ali stvar je u tome što Katalonac to ne čini iz poglavlja u poglavlje, nego u pravilu u jednoj jedinoj rečenici koja može započeti u ispovjednoj, ich formi, da bi je zaključio sveznajući pripovjedač u trećemu licu. I to nije jedini luping kojega Cabré voli servirati čitateljima u tijesnom formatu rečenice, jer ona zna započeti u nekom vremenu i na nekom prostoru da bi se onda protegnula desecima ili stotinama godina unatrag i skončala na drugome kraju svijeta.

Što je najluđe, premda ovakvo žongliranje perspektivama može zvučati kao vrlo učinkovita strategija mrcvarenja čitatelja, kroz njegove se romane bordiža s lakoćom. Prvih nekoliko stranica dovoljno je da razumijemo autorovu strategiju i da joj se potom s užitkom prepustimo.

To Cabréovo umijeće zaista je unikatno; gdje bi drugi pisci surovo izmučili čitatelje, on ih meko ušuškava u tkivo teksta tjerajući ih na kompulzivno gutanje stranica. I nema te književne teorije koja je kadra suhim jezikom zanata i struke objasniti kako mu to polazi za rukom.

Sva ta svojstva vidljiva su i na stranicama „Eunuhove sjene“. I ovoga puta radi se o romanu koji je malo kammerspiel, a malo široka, povijesna freska. Opet je politika ta koja nemilosrdno određuje živote njegovih likova, a likova ima kao na kolodvoru u vrijeme najveće gužve.

Priča počinje u otmjenom restoranu gdje su na večeru došli glavni junak, Miguel Gensana, sredovječni novinar s reputacijom velikog znalca mnogih umjetničkih formi, i njegova mlada kolegica. Ona želi napisati priču o njegovom starom prijatelju, istaknutom socijalističkom političaru koji je upravo preminuo.

Između sljedova večere servirane u kući koja je nekoć pripadala obitelji Gensana i u kojoj je Miguel odrastao, čut ćemo priču o glavnom junaku koji je od poslušna katolika postao lijevi militant obučavan u Bejrutu, a onda prestao to biti.

Tu storiju presijecat će druga pripovjedna linija koju nam izlaže njegov sad već pokojni stric Maurici Sicart, a koja se tiče cijele uklete loze. Tome sloju priče pridružen je grafički prikaz ne jednog razlistalog obiteljskog stabla, nego čak tri, skoro cijeli šumarak, dok je dio Miguelove storije začinjen ulomcima glazbenih partitura Schuberta i Brahmsa, doslovce notama.

Ovom prilikom Cabré je toliko otišao u širinu da je zamaglio fokus. Mnogi kitnjasti meandri priče ovom su čitatelju raspršili koncentraciju, dok mi je, s druge strane, Miguelov lik ostao dalek i stran, netko s čijim se mukama teško mogu poistovjetiti, jer mi se doimaju kao puki literarni konstrukti.

Konačno, ekstravagantne (a nimalo funkcionalne) rodoslovne i glazbene ilustracije teško je doživjeti drukčije nego kao puko prenemaganje. Šteta, a tako sam „volio voljeti“ Cabréa.

U siječnju 2017. jedan prikaz zaključio sam ovim riječima: „Na koncu, dopustite mi malo prostodušne čitateljske euforije: 'Ispovijedam' Jaumea Cabréa autentično je remek-djelo!“

Pretpostavljam da možete naslutiti s kakvom sam radošću četiri i pol godine kasnije dočekao izlazak „Eunuhove sjene“, nove knjige pisca koji me izbacio iz cipela (ovo „nove“ shvatite relativno, jer se radi o libru izvorno objavljenom 1996., dakle prije „Glasova Pamana“ iz 2004. i „Ispovjedam“ iz 2011., dvaju romana koji su kod nas već prevedeni).

Na izmaku petoljetke ispunjene žudnjom za Cabréovom novom knjigom (pa makar bila i stara), libar je osvanuo na mom kantunalu, i to u prijevodu Borisa Dumančića koji je odradio maestralan posao s dvjema prethodnim romanima katalonskog meštra.

Sve je bilo spremno za puno sati (jer radi se o autoru koji piše odeblje libre) čitalačkog užitka koji je, međutim, na neku čudnu foru, ovom prilikom izostao. Da ne bude nikakve zabune, „Eunuhova sjena“ vrlo je dobar roman, ali samo zato što pisac njegova talenta i kad ponudi rukopis ispod svoje poslovično visoke razine još uvijek za cijelu glavu nadmašuje konkurenciju.

Što je, dakle, u ovom slučaju pošlo krivo? Naoko ništa. Jaume Cabré i ovdje je onaj stari, poznati, voljeni.

Tko se imao prilike susresti s njegovom literaturom, vrlo dobro zna kako se radi o piscu s viškom priča u rukavu, koji „malim“, osobnim storijama rado kontrapunktira one „velike“, društvene odnosno povijesne, koji voli pripovjedne digresije i raspolaže rijetkom, skoro pa čarobnom vještinom da se uvijek iznova s lakoćom vrati natrag u glavno narativno korito, pritom nimalo ne zbunjujući čitatelja.

Cabré se k tome voli poigravati pripovjednim perspektivama. Ne'š ti njega, mogao bi mi sada prigovoriti poneki brzopleti čitatelj, pa i osrednji ili čak slabi pisci znaju kako se mogu izmjenjivati narativna očišta.

Da, naravno, ali stvar je u tome što Katalonac to ne čini iz poglavlja u poglavlje, nego u pravilu u jednoj jedinoj rečenici koja može započeti u ispovjednoj, ich formi, da bi je zaključio sveznajući pripovjedač u trećemu licu. I to nije jedini luping kojega Cabré voli servirati čitateljima u tijesnom formatu rečenice, jer ona zna započeti u nekom vremenu i na nekom prostoru da bi se onda protegnula desecima ili stotinama godina unatrag i skončala na drugome kraju svijeta.

Što je najluđe, premda ovakvo žongliranje perspektivama može zvučati kao vrlo učinkovita strategija mrcvarenja čitatelja, kroz njegove se romane bordiža s lakoćom. Prvih nekoliko stranica dovoljno je da razumijemo autorovu strategiju i da joj se potom s užitkom prepustimo.

To Cabréovo umijeće zaista je unikatno; gdje bi drugi pisci surovo izmučili čitatelje, on ih meko ušuškava u tkivo teksta tjerajući ih na kompulzivno gutanje stranica. I nema te književne teorije koja je kadra suhim jezikom zanata i struke objasniti kako mu to polazi za rukom.

Sva ta svojstva vidljiva su i na stranicama „Eunuhove sjene“. I ovoga puta radi se o romanu koji je malo kammerspiel, a malo široka, povijesna freska. Opet je politika ta koja nemilosrdno određuje živote njegovih likova, a likova ima kao na kolodvoru u vrijeme najveće gužve.

Priča počinje u otmjenom restoranu gdje su na večeru došli glavni junak, Miguel Gensana, sredovječni novinar s reputacijom velikog znalca mnogih umjetničkih formi, i njegova mlada kolegica. Ona želi napisati priču o njegovom starom prijatelju, istaknutom socijalističkom političaru koji je upravo preminuo.

Između sljedova večere servirane u kući koja je nekoć pripadala obitelji Gensana i u kojoj je Miguel odrastao, čut ćemo priču o glavnom junaku koji je od poslušna katolika postao lijevi militant obučavan u Bejrutu, a onda prestao to biti.

Tu storiju presijecat će druga pripovjedna linija koju nam izlaže njegov sad već pokojni stric Maurici Sicart, a koja se tiče cijele uklete loze. Tome sloju priče pridružen je grafički prikaz ne jednog razlistalog obiteljskog stabla, nego čak tri, skoro cijeli šumarak, dok je dio Miguelove storije začinjen ulomcima glazbenih partitura Schuberta i Brahmsa, doslovce notama.

Ovom prilikom Cabré je toliko otišao u širinu da je zamaglio fokus. Mnogi kitnjasti meandri priče ovom su čitatelju raspršili koncentraciju, dok mi je, s druge strane, Miguelov lik ostao dalek i stran, netko s čijim se mukama teško mogu poistovjetiti, jer mi se doimaju kao puki literarni konstrukti.

Konačno, ekstravagantne (a nimalo funkcionalne) rodoslovne i glazbene ilustracije teško je doživjeti drukčije nego kao puko prenemaganje. Šteta, a tako sam „volio voljeti“ Cabréa.
