Šamar Willa Smitha na dodjeli Oscara imao je dalekosežne posljedice. Smith nije samo opalio šamar Chrisu Rocku pred višemilijunskim auditorijem. Opalio ga je i filmskoj industriji i društvu, uključujući crnu zajednicu kojoj pripada.

Junak/idol mnogih mladih crnaca, zahvaljujući ulogama u filmovima "Zločesti dečki", "Dan nezavisnosti" i "Men In Black", pružio je loš primjer mladim obožavateljima posegnuvši za nasiljem kao odgovorom na uvredu i dao (bijelim) američkim rasistima povoda da nastave prikazivati Afroamerikanace kao nasilne i opasne ljude.

Da stvar bude gora, učinio je to netom prije nego što je Rock od svih dokumentarnih filmova ("Flee") proglasio najboljim baš "Summer Of Soul", prethodno nagrađen na Sundance festivalu. "Summer Of Soul... Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised" je dokumentarac o revolucionarnom, povijesnom koncertu za "black community", Harlem Cultural Festivalu, svojevrsnom crnom Woodstocku koji se održao u ljeto 1969. godine.

Pozlaćivanje ovoga dokumentarnog filma na Oscarima ostalo je u sjeni Smithova šamara. Mnogima je vjerojatno i promaknulo da je "Summer of Soul" uopće dobio zlatni kipić budući da su trljali oči misleći valjda da im se samo učinilo ono što su vidjeli na oskarovskoj pozornici. Smithov incident oduzeo je trenutak za pamćenje redatelju dokumentarca, Grammyjem ovjenčanom glazbeniku Ahmiru "Questloveu" Thompsonu (Roots); njegov lijepi pobjednički govor izgubio se u kakofoniji šoka i nevjerice.

Ispada da Harlem Cultural Festival jednostavno nema sreće. Godine 1969. ostao je u drugom planu Woodstocka i izblijedio iz sjećanja, da bi ga sada, ironično i nezasluženo, zasjenio Smith. Ironija ne može biti veća s obzirom na značaj toga događaja za crnu zajednicu, oslikan u dokumentarnom filmu koji ga izvlači iz povijesti i otima zaboravu. Harlem Cultural Festival odvijao se u harlemskom parku, 100 milja dalje od Woodstocka (i otprilike istodobno), a posjetilo ga je masovnih 300.000 ljudi.

Koncert u organizaciji klupskog promotora Tonyja Lawrencea bio je ovjekovječen kamerom i redatelj Hal Tulchin je snimio gotovo 40 sati materijala, ali snimka je čučala u podrumu 50 godina i nikad dosad nije bila viđena. Onomad je bio "precrn" za emitiranje na televiziji, što sugerira podnaslov filma "When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised", dok mu naruku nije išlo i podudaranje s popularnijim Woodstockom.

Srećom, Questlove ga je oživio ovim dokumentarcem koji donosi koncertne snimke, ponajbolje takve vrste uz "Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music" (1970.) Michaela Wadleigha, kao i intervjue s akterima događaja, izvođačima poput Marilyn McCoo i Billyja Davisa Jr.-a iz grupe 5th Dimension, posjetiteljima, novinarima, poput Charlayne Hunter-Gault itd.

Questlove je obavio lavovski posao i da je samo smontirao koncertni film, ispresijecan "talking heads" intervjuima, već bi postigao više nego dovoljno. Međutim, on je proširio granice glazbenog filma i stavio ga u okvir povijesti, politike, kulture i društva dane epohe kasnih šezdesetih.

S jedne strane imamo senzacionalne nastupe sastava kao što su Sly and the Family Stone, 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight & the Pips..., zatim Nine Simone, Stevieja Wondera, Mavis Staples, Mahalije Jackson..., pri čemu su neki od njih bili u naponu snage. Izvedbe su sjajne, primjerice "hairovski" spoj "Aquarius/ Let the Sun Shine In" 5th Dimensiona, koji su do ovog koncerta za neke zvučali "prebijelo", tj. bili crna grupa bijelog zvuka.

Sly and the Family Stone, među ostalim, izvode "I Want To Take You Higher" kao i na Woodstocku, Mavis Staples i Mahalia Jackson zajedno pjevaju "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", a Nina Simone "Ain't Got No/ I Got Life", također iz čuvcenog mjuzikla "Hair".

Međutim, s druge strane, kad (do)znamo da je "Precious Lord" bila omiljena pjesma Martina Luthera Kinga i da je izvedba donijela katarzu svim crncima jer "gospel je više od religije, terapija za stres i pritisak za osobe koje su crne u Americi", a umjesto odlaska psihoterapeutu slušala se Mahalia Jackson, jasno je da se politika uvukla u film i ispreplela s muzikom.

To potvrđuje i konstatacija da se bol i prkos crnog naroda osjećao u glasu Nine Simone, kao i njezine riječi s pozornice: "Jeste li spremni razbiti bijele stvari? Jeste li spremni sagraditi crne stvari?" Redatelj zarana uspostavlja društveno-politički kontekst vremena.

Dokumentarističke snimke podsjećaju na atentate na Kennedyjeve, Malcolma X-a i Kinga. Podsjećaju na nemire u gradovima. Na rat u Vijetnamu. Sve to je prethodilo festivalu kojim se obilježavala godišnjica Kingove smrti (ubijen u proljeće 1968.), čuvale su ga Crne pantere, a imao je podršku gradonačelnika New Yorka Johna Lindsayja.

"Želimo slobodu sad", čujemo vapaj. Tada je vladala "klima mržnje" prema crncima i festival je stigao u pravo vrijeme (1969.) i održao se na pravom mjestu (u srcu Harlema) za slavu "black power" pokreta. Istodobno s održavanjem koncerta, Neil Armstrong je na Mjesecu napravio "mali korak za čovjeka, veliki za čovječanstvo", čega se dokumentarac isto dotiče.

Putovanje na Mjesec sugovornici opisuju kao bacanje novca jer se za te pare moglo nahraniti gladne u Harlemu i drugdje u Americi. Ipak, Harlem Cultural Festival je napravio veliki korak za crnog čovjeka i ovjekovječio prijelomnu točku za "black community". Nikad dotad se toliko crnaca nije okupilo na jednom mjestu.

"Nisam nikad vidio ovoliko crnih ljudi na jednom mjestu u mom životu. Crni ljudi gdje god pogled seže", kaže jedan posjetitelj. "More crnih ljudi", opiše drugi. "Ultimativni crnački roštilj", zaključi treći. "Bratsko" zajedništvo je opipljivo. "Vidim te, brate", veli pjevač David Ruffin crncu koji se popeo na stablo da bolje vidi koncert.

Slični spontani trenuci krase dokumentarac koji, poput "Woodstocka", donosi i snimke obitelji i djece na koncertu, djece koja su postala odrasli ljudi i prisjećaju se događaja u intervjuima. Jedno od najvažnijih prisjećanja daje novinarka Hunter-Gault koja se borila za to da joj riječ "black" (crnci) ostane u tekstu u "New York Timesu" nakon što joj je urednik promijenio u "negro" (crnje) i uspjela se izboriti. Bilo je to ljeto "značajne promjene", kad je riječ "negro" umrla, a "black" bila rođena. Summer Of Soul.

Dokumentarac navodi gledatelja da se pita postoji li još koji ovakav događaj koji kupi prašinu u nekom podrumu, ali i da poželi koncertni doks o nekom "woodstockovskom" megakoncertu s ovih prostora, primjerice onom Bijelog dugmeta kod Hajdučke česme.

Šamar Willa Smitha na dodjeli Oscara imao je dalekosežne posljedice. Smith nije samo opalio šamar Chrisu Rocku pred višemilijunskim auditorijem. Opalio ga je i filmskoj industriji i društvu, uključujući crnu zajednicu kojoj pripada.

Junak/idol mnogih mladih crnaca, zahvaljujući ulogama u filmovima "Zločesti dečki", "Dan nezavisnosti" i "Men In Black", pružio je loš primjer mladim obožavateljima posegnuvši za nasiljem kao odgovorom na uvredu i dao (bijelim) američkim rasistima povoda da nastave prikazivati Afroamerikanace kao nasilne i opasne ljude.

Da stvar bude gora, učinio je to netom prije nego što je Rock od svih dokumentarnih filmova ("Flee") proglasio najboljim baš "Summer Of Soul", prethodno nagrađen na Sundance festivalu. "Summer Of Soul... Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised" je dokumentarac o revolucionarnom, povijesnom koncertu za "black community", Harlem Cultural Festivalu, svojevrsnom crnom Woodstocku koji se održao u ljeto 1969. godine.

Pozlaćivanje ovoga dokumentarnog filma na Oscarima ostalo je u sjeni Smithova šamara. Mnogima je vjerojatno i promaknulo da je "Summer of Soul" uopće dobio zlatni kipić budući da su trljali oči misleći valjda da im se samo učinilo ono što su vidjeli na oskarovskoj pozornici. Smithov incident oduzeo je trenutak za pamćenje redatelju dokumentarca, Grammyjem ovjenčanom glazbeniku Ahmiru "Questloveu" Thompsonu (Roots); njegov lijepi pobjednički govor izgubio se u kakofoniji šoka i nevjerice.

Ispada da Harlem Cultural Festival jednostavno nema sreće. Godine 1969. ostao je u drugom planu Woodstocka i izblijedio iz sjećanja, da bi ga sada, ironično i nezasluženo, zasjenio Smith. Ironija ne može biti veća s obzirom na značaj toga događaja za crnu zajednicu, oslikan u dokumentarnom filmu koji ga izvlači iz povijesti i otima zaboravu. Harlem Cultural Festival odvijao se u harlemskom parku, 100 milja dalje od Woodstocka (i otprilike istodobno), a posjetilo ga je masovnih 300.000 ljudi.

Koncert u organizaciji klupskog promotora Tonyja Lawrencea bio je ovjekovječen kamerom i redatelj Hal Tulchin je snimio gotovo 40 sati materijala, ali snimka je čučala u podrumu 50 godina i nikad dosad nije bila viđena. Onomad je bio "precrn" za emitiranje na televiziji, što sugerira podnaslov filma "When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised", dok mu naruku nije išlo i podudaranje s popularnijim Woodstockom.

Srećom, Questlove ga je oživio ovim dokumentarcem koji donosi koncertne snimke, ponajbolje takve vrste uz "Woodstock: Three Days of Peace and Music" (1970.) Michaela Wadleigha, kao i intervjue s akterima događaja, izvođačima poput Marilyn McCoo i Billyja Davisa Jr.-a iz grupe 5th Dimension, posjetiteljima, novinarima, poput Charlayne Hunter-Gault itd.

Questlove je obavio lavovski posao i da je samo smontirao koncertni film, ispresijecan "talking heads" intervjuima, već bi postigao više nego dovoljno. Međutim, on je proširio granice glazbenog filma i stavio ga u okvir povijesti, politike, kulture i društva dane epohe kasnih šezdesetih.

S jedne strane imamo senzacionalne nastupe sastava kao što su Sly and the Family Stone, 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight & the Pips..., zatim Nine Simone, Stevieja Wondera, Mavis Staples, Mahalije Jackson..., pri čemu su neki od njih bili u naponu snage. Izvedbe su sjajne, primjerice "hairovski" spoj "Aquarius/ Let the Sun Shine In" 5th Dimensiona, koji su do ovog koncerta za neke zvučali "prebijelo", tj. bili crna grupa bijelog zvuka.

Sly and the Family Stone, među ostalim, izvode "I Want To Take You Higher" kao i na Woodstocku, Mavis Staples i Mahalia Jackson zajedno pjevaju "Take My Hand, Precious Lord", a Nina Simone "Ain't Got No/ I Got Life", također iz čuvcenog mjuzikla "Hair".

Međutim, s druge strane, kad (do)znamo da je "Precious Lord" bila omiljena pjesma Martina Luthera Kinga i da je izvedba donijela katarzu svim crncima jer "gospel je više od religije, terapija za stres i pritisak za osobe koje su crne u Americi", a umjesto odlaska psihoterapeutu slušala se Mahalia Jackson, jasno je da se politika uvukla u film i ispreplela s muzikom.

To potvrđuje i konstatacija da se bol i prkos crnog naroda osjećao u glasu Nine Simone, kao i njezine riječi s pozornice: "Jeste li spremni razbiti bijele stvari? Jeste li spremni sagraditi crne stvari?" Redatelj zarana uspostavlja društveno-politički kontekst vremena.

Dokumentarističke snimke podsjećaju na atentate na Kennedyjeve, Malcolma X-a i Kinga. Podsjećaju na nemire u gradovima. Na rat u Vijetnamu. Sve to je prethodilo festivalu kojim se obilježavala godišnjica Kingove smrti (ubijen u proljeće 1968.), čuvale su ga Crne pantere, a imao je podršku gradonačelnika New Yorka Johna Lindsayja.

"Želimo slobodu sad", čujemo vapaj. Tada je vladala "klima mržnje" prema crncima i festival je stigao u pravo vrijeme (1969.) i održao se na pravom mjestu (u srcu Harlema) za slavu "black power" pokreta. Istodobno s održavanjem koncerta, Neil Armstrong je na Mjesecu napravio "mali korak za čovjeka, veliki za čovječanstvo", čega se dokumentarac isto dotiče.

Putovanje na Mjesec sugovornici opisuju kao bacanje novca jer se za te pare moglo nahraniti gladne u Harlemu i drugdje u Americi. Ipak, Harlem Cultural Festival je napravio veliki korak za crnog čovjeka i ovjekovječio prijelomnu točku za "black community". Nikad dotad se toliko crnaca nije okupilo na jednom mjestu.

"Nisam nikad vidio ovoliko crnih ljudi na jednom mjestu u mom životu. Crni ljudi gdje god pogled seže", kaže jedan posjetitelj. "More crnih ljudi", opiše drugi. "Ultimativni crnački roštilj", zaključi treći. "Bratsko" zajedništvo je opipljivo. "Vidim te, brate", veli pjevač David Ruffin crncu koji se popeo na stablo da bolje vidi koncert.

Slični spontani trenuci krase dokumentarac koji, poput "Woodstocka", donosi i snimke obitelji i djece na koncertu, djece koja su postala odrasli ljudi i prisjećaju se događaja u intervjuima. Jedno od najvažnijih prisjećanja daje novinarka Hunter-Gault koja se borila za to da joj riječ "black" (crnci) ostane u tekstu u "New York Timesu" nakon što joj je urednik promijenio u "negro" (crnje) i uspjela se izboriti. Bilo je to ljeto "značajne promjene", kad je riječ "negro" umrla, a "black" bila rođena. Summer Of Soul.

Dokumentarac navodi gledatelja da se pita postoji li još koji ovakav događaj koji kupi prašinu u nekom podrumu, ali i da poželi koncertni doks o nekom "woodstockovskom" megakoncertu s ovih prostora, primjerice onom Bijelog dugmeta kod Hajdučke česme.
