Omikron varijanta koronavirusa širi se brže od delte i pogađa cijepljene i one koji su prebolili covid-19, rekao je u ponedjeljak glavni direktor WHO-a.
"Sada postoje čvrsti dokazi da se omikron širi značajno brže od delta varijante", rekao je Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus na konferenciji za novinare u Ženevi.
"I veći su izgledi za infekciju ili ponovnu infekciju ljudi koji su se cijepili i onih koji su se oporavili od covida-19", rekao je.
Glavna znanstvenica WHO-a Soumya Swaminathan rekla je da omikron varijanta uspješno izbjegava neke odgovore imunosnog sustava, što znači da bi booster doze cjepiva trebalo davati ljudima sa slabijim imunosnim sustavima.
Omikron izgleda bolje izbjegava antitijela čije stvaranje potiču neka cjepiva, ali postoje i drugi oblici imuniteta koji mogu spriječiti zarazu i bolest, ističu stručnjaci WHO-a.
"Ne vjerujemo da će sva cjepiva postati potpuno neučinkovita", rekla je Swaminathan.
Stručnjak WHO-a Abdi Mahamud dodao je: "Premda vidimo smanjenje broja neutralizirajućih antitijela, gotovo svi podaci pokazuju da T stanice ostaju nepromijenjene, a to nam doista treba".
T stanice mogu spriječiti teške oblike bolesti napadajući zaražene stanice.
Swaminathan je dodala da je još prerano da bi se mogao donijeti zaključak da je omikron varijanta blaža od drugih varijanti koronavirusa te je upozorila da bi moglo doći do preopterećenja zdravstvenih sustava.
"Vjerojatno nije pametno opustiti se i misliti da je to blaga varijanta, da neće izazvati tešku bolest, jer mislim da će s obzirom na to kako broj zaraženih raste svi zdravstveni sustavi biti pod pritiskom", rekla je.
Objasnila je da se percepcija da je omikron blaži temelji na početnim podacima iz dijelova Južnoafričke Republike koji bi mogli biti zavaravajući jer se stanovništvo ondje već u velikom postotku zarazilo koronavirusom i steklo određeni imunitet.
Stručnjaci WHO-a istaknuli su da nadu u kraj pandemije budi razvoj druge i treće generacije cjepiva, daljnji razvoj lijekova i druge inovacije.
Pandemija je do sada odnijela više od 5,6 milijuna ljudskih života u svijetu.

Omikron varijanta koronavirusa širi se brže od delte i pogađa cijepljene i one koji su prebolili covid-19, rekao je u ponedjeljak glavni direktor WHO-a.
"Sada postoje čvrsti dokazi da se omikron širi značajno brže od delta varijante", rekao je Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus na konferenciji za novinare u Ženevi.
"I veći su izgledi za infekciju ili ponovnu infekciju ljudi koji su se cijepili i onih koji su se oporavili od covida-19", rekao je.
Glavna znanstvenica WHO-a Soumya Swaminathan rekla je da omikron varijanta uspješno izbjegava neke odgovore imunosnog sustava, što znači da bi booster doze cjepiva trebalo davati ljudima sa slabijim imunosnim sustavima.
Omikron izgleda bolje izbjegava antitijela čije stvaranje potiču neka cjepiva, ali postoje i drugi oblici imuniteta koji mogu spriječiti zarazu i bolest, ističu stručnjaci WHO-a.
"Ne vjerujemo da će sva cjepiva postati potpuno neučinkovita", rekla je Swaminathan.
Stručnjak WHO-a Abdi Mahamud dodao je: "Premda vidimo smanjenje broja neutralizirajućih antitijela, gotovo svi podaci pokazuju da T stanice ostaju nepromijenjene, a to nam doista treba".
T stanice mogu spriječiti teške oblike bolesti napadajući zaražene stanice.
Swaminathan je dodala da je još prerano da bi se mogao donijeti zaključak da je omikron varijanta blaža od drugih varijanti koronavirusa te je upozorila da bi moglo doći do preopterećenja zdravstvenih sustava.
"Vjerojatno nije pametno opustiti se i misliti da je to blaga varijanta, da neće izazvati tešku bolest, jer mislim da će s obzirom na to kako broj zaraženih raste svi zdravstveni sustavi biti pod pritiskom", rekla je.
Objasnila je da se percepcija da je omikron blaži temelji na početnim podacima iz dijelova Južnoafričke Republike koji bi mogli biti zavaravajući jer se stanovništvo ondje već u velikom postotku zarazilo koronavirusom i steklo određeni imunitet.
Stručnjaci WHO-a istaknuli su da nadu u kraj pandemije budi razvoj druge i treće generacije cjepiva, daljnji razvoj lijekova i druge inovacije.
Pandemija je do sada odnijela više od 5,6 milijuna ljudskih života u svijetu.
