Godišnji maksimum zaleđene morske površine oko Antarktike pao je na najnižu razinu u posljednje 44 godine na kraju australnog ljeta koje završava u veljači, u vrijeme kada se činilo da se taj ledeni kontinent bolje nosi s klimatskim promjenama od Arktika, zaključak je grupe istraživača.

U sklopu prirodnog godišnjeg sezonskog ciklusa leda koji pluta oceanom, on se otapa ljeti i ponovno formira zimi, pri čemu satelitske snimke iz 1978. vrlo precizno bilježe područja pokrivena ledom tijekom svih godišnjih doba uzastopno iz godine u godinu.

Od početka satelitskih mjerenja dva se pola ponašaju različito. Morski led otapa se brže na Grenlandu i na Arktiku, no sateliti pokazuju blagi porast otapanja zaleđene morske površine i na Antarktici, što je u suprotnosti s očekivanjima nekih klimatskih modela.

Podaci grupe istraživača sa Sveučilišta Sun Aat-sen iz Guangzhoua, objavljeni u časopisu Advances in Atmospheric Sciences ukazuju na to da je 25. veljače izmjerena rekordno niska razina površine pod ledom od početka mjerenja 1978.

Na taj dan je izmjereno 1,9 milijuna četvornih kilometara zaleđene morske površine u Južnom oceanu.

Pet godina nakon što je maksimum zaleđene morske površine dosegao rekordno nisku vrijednost, koja je u 2017. godini iznosila nešto više od 2 milijuna km2, područje pokriveno morskim ledom prvi je put palo na površinu manju od 2 milijuna km2, što je 30 posto manje od prosjeka u trideset godina, odnosno u razdoblju između 1981. i 2010.

Znanstvenici su očekivali da će se ledena površina nakon rekordno niske razine iz 2017. početi oporavljati.

Studija potvrđuje opažanja američkoga Nacionalnog centra za podatke o snijegu i ledu, koja su objavljena prije nekoliko tjedana, neposredno prije dolaska neviđenog toplinskog vala do istočne Antarktike u ožujku.

Ljetne "anomalije" opažene su uglavnom u zapadnom dijelu Antarktike, koja je osjetljivija na klimatske promjene od puno većeg područja istočne Antarktike.

Autori najnovije studije smatraju da je nestanak leda u zapadnom Amundsenovom moru i u istočnom Rossovom moru bio maksimalan do 25. veljače. Općenito gledano, morski se led počeo povlačiti ranije tijekom godine, od početka rujna, a u odnosu na 2017. zabilježio je kasniji oporavak krajem veljače.

Otapanje je povezano s "termodinamikom", odnosno utjecajem temperatura, ali i s kretanjem leda prema sjeveru, kao i s tanjim slojem leda na obali Amundsenova mora.

Otapanje zaleđene morske površine ne utječe na razinu mora, jer morski led nastaje smrzavanjem slane vode, no manji dijelovi zaleđene morske površine također su razlog za zabrinutost, smatraju znanstvenici.

Kada se bijela površina morskog leda, koja reflektira energiju sunca, zamijeni tamnom površinom mora, "manje je refleksije topline, a više apsorpcije, zbog čega se otapa više leda i dolazi do apsorpcije više topline. To je poput začaranog kruga", objasnio je jedan od suautora studije, Qinghua Yang, profesor na Sveučilištu Sun Yat-sen.

Godišnji maksimum zaleđene morske površine oko Antarktike pao je na najnižu razinu u posljednje 44 godine na kraju australnog ljeta koje završava u veljači, u vrijeme kada se činilo da se taj ledeni kontinent bolje nosi s klimatskim promjenama od Arktika, zaključak je grupe istraživača.

U sklopu prirodnog godišnjeg sezonskog ciklusa leda koji pluta oceanom, on se otapa ljeti i ponovno formira zimi, pri čemu satelitske snimke iz 1978. vrlo precizno bilježe područja pokrivena ledom tijekom svih godišnjih doba uzastopno iz godine u godinu.

Od početka satelitskih mjerenja dva se pola ponašaju različito. Morski led otapa se brže na Grenlandu i na Arktiku, no sateliti pokazuju blagi porast otapanja zaleđene morske površine i na Antarktici, što je u suprotnosti s očekivanjima nekih klimatskih modela.

Podaci grupe istraživača sa Sveučilišta Sun Aat-sen iz Guangzhoua, objavljeni u časopisu Advances in Atmospheric Sciences ukazuju na to da je 25. veljače izmjerena rekordno niska razina površine pod ledom od početka mjerenja 1978.

Na taj dan je izmjereno 1,9 milijuna četvornih kilometara zaleđene morske površine u Južnom oceanu.

Pet godina nakon što je maksimum zaleđene morske površine dosegao rekordno nisku vrijednost, koja je u 2017. godini iznosila nešto više od 2 milijuna km2, područje pokriveno morskim ledom prvi je put palo na površinu manju od 2 milijuna km2, što je 30 posto manje od prosjeka u trideset godina, odnosno u razdoblju između 1981. i 2010.

Studija potvrđuje opažanja američkoga Nacionalnog centra za podatke o snijegu i ledu, koja su objavljena prije nekoliko tjedana, neposredno prije dolaska neviđenog toplinskog vala do istočne Antarktike u ožujku.

Ljetne "anomalije" opažene su uglavnom u zapadnom dijelu Antarktike, koja je osjetljivija na klimatske promjene od puno većeg područja istočne Antarktike.

Autori najnovije studije smatraju da je nestanak leda u zapadnom Amundsenovom moru i u istočnom Rossovom moru bio maksimalan do 25. veljače. Općenito gledano, morski se led počeo povlačiti ranije tijekom godine, od početka rujna, a u odnosu na 2017. zabilježio je kasniji oporavak krajem veljače.

Otapanje je povezano s "termodinamikom", odnosno utjecajem temperatura, ali i s kretanjem leda prema sjeveru, kao i s tanjim slojem leda na obali Amundsenova mora.

Otapanje zaleđene morske površine ne utječe na razinu mora, jer morski led nastaje smrzavanjem slane vode, no manji dijelovi zaleđene morske površine također su razlog za zabrinutost, smatraju znanstvenici.

Kada se bijela površina morskog leda, koja reflektira energiju sunca, zamijeni tamnom površinom mora, "manje je refleksije topline, a više apsorpcije, zbog čega se otapa više leda i dolazi do apsorpcije više topline. To je poput začaranog kruga", objasnio je jedan od suautora studije, Qinghua Yang, profesor na Sveučilištu Sun Yat-sen.

Godišnji maksimum zaleđene morske površine oko Antarktike pao je na najnižu razinu u posljednje 44 godine na kraju australnog ljeta koje završava u veljači, u vrijeme kada se činilo da se taj ledeni kontinent bolje nosi s klimatskim promjenama od Arktika, zaključak je grupe istraživača.

U sklopu prirodnog godišnjeg sezonskog ciklusa leda koji pluta oceanom, on se otapa ljeti i ponovno formira zimi, pri čemu satelitske snimke iz 1978. vrlo precizno bilježe područja pokrivena ledom tijekom svih godišnjih doba uzastopno iz godine u godinu.

Od početka satelitskih mjerenja dva se pola ponašaju različito. Morski led otapa se brže na Grenlandu i na Arktiku, no sateliti pokazuju blagi porast otapanja zaleđene morske površine i na Antarktici, što je u suprotnosti s očekivanjima nekih klimatskih modela.

Podaci grupe istraživača sa Sveučilišta Sun Aat-sen iz Guangzhoua, objavljeni u časopisu Advances in Atmospheric Sciences ukazuju na to da je 25. veljače izmjerena rekordno niska razina površine pod ledom od početka mjerenja 1978.

Na taj dan je izmjereno 1,9 milijuna četvornih kilometara zaleđene morske površine u Južnom oceanu.

Pet godina nakon što je maksimum zaleđene morske površine dosegao rekordno nisku vrijednost, koja je u 2017. godini iznosila nešto više od 2 milijuna km2, područje pokriveno morskim ledom prvi je put palo na površinu manju od 2 milijuna km2, što je 30 posto manje od prosjeka u trideset godina, odnosno u razdoblju između 1981. i 2010.
