Deception Island ili Otok Prijevara, otok u južnošetlandskom otočju na Antarktici, svoje ime duguje geološkom porijeklu. Iako s pučine izgleda kao i drugi otoci, Deception Island je vrh kratera vulkana u koji je prodrlo more.

Prijevarom ga je 1820. prozvao Nathaniel Palmer, jedan od prvih za koje se pouzdano zna da je boravio na tome otoku. Tamo ga je odveo lov na tuljane.

I kasniji stanovnici otoka su bili lovci kojima je njegov potkovičasti oblik i središnji duboki zaljev Port Foster pružao zaštitu od vjetrova, ledenjaka i valova.

Na otoku su desetljećima bile norveška i čileanska kitolovna baza, kao i brojne međunarodne znanstveno - istraživačke posade.

Nakon erupcija vulkana 1967. i 1969. Deception je napušten i na njemu više nema stalnih stanovnika.

Povremeno i privremeno ga opet nasele istraživači i znanstvenici, a godišnje ga posjeti oko 10.000 turista koji mogu vidjeti ostatke tvornica za preradu kitova i napuštene aviohangare, te se brčkajući ugrijati u nekom od vulkanskih termalnih izvora.

Deception Island ili Otok Prijevara, otok u južnošetlandskom otočju na Antarktici, svoje ime duguje geološkom porijeklu. Iako s pučine izgleda kao i drugi otoci, Deception Island je vrh kratera vulkana u koji je prodrlo more.

Prijevarom ga je 1820. prozvao Nathaniel Palmer, jedan od prvih za koje se pouzdano zna da je boravio na tome otoku. Tamo ga je odveo lov na tuljane.

I kasniji stanovnici otoka su bili lovci kojima je njegov potkovičasti oblik i središnji duboki zaljev Port Foster pružao zaštitu od vjetrova, ledenjaka i valova.

Na otoku su desetljećima bile norveška i čileanska kitolovna baza, kao i brojne međunarodne znanstveno - istraživačke posade.

Nakon erupcija vulkana 1967. i 1969. Deception je napušten i na njemu više nema stalnih stanovnika.

Povremeno i privremeno ga opet nasele istraživači i znanstvenici, a godišnje ga posjeti oko 10.000 turista koji mogu vidjeti ostatke tvornica za preradu kitova i napuštene aviohangare, te se brčkajući ugrijati u nekom od vulkanskih termalnih izvora.

Deception Island ili Otok Prijevara, otok u južnošetlandskom otočju na Antarktici, svoje ime duguje geološkom porijeklu. Iako s pučine izgleda kao i drugi otoci, Deception Island je vrh kratera vulkana u koji je prodrlo more.

Prijevarom ga je 1820. prozvao Nathaniel Palmer, jedan od prvih za koje se pouzdano zna da je boravio na tome otoku. Tamo ga je odveo lov na tuljane.

I kasniji stanovnici otoka su bili lovci kojima je njegov potkovičasti oblik i središnji duboki zaljev Port Foster pružao zaštitu od vjetrova, ledenjaka i valova.

Na otoku su desetljećima bile norveška i čileanska kitolovna baza, kao i brojne međunarodne znanstveno - istraživačke posade.

Nakon erupcija vulkana 1967. i 1969. Deception je napušten i na njemu više nema stalnih stanovnika.

Povremeno i privremeno ga opet nasele istraživači i znanstvenici, a godišnje ga posjeti oko 10.000 turista koji mogu vidjeti ostatke tvornica za preradu kitova i napuštene aviohangare, te se brčkajući ugrijati u nekom od vulkanskih termalnih izvora.
