Polinezijski moreplovci vjerojatno su doplovili do Antarktike stotinama godina prije zapadnjačkih istraživača kojima se obično pripisuju zasluge za otkrivanje tog ledenog kontinenta, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.

Novozelandski znanstvenici proučavali su takozvanu "sivu literaturu", među kojom su brojni usmeni podaci, autohtona povijesna umjetnička djela i neakademski izvori, nastojeći pronaći povezanost između maorskih moreplovaca i Antarktike.

Siva literatura je pojam pod kojim obavještajne službe, knjižničari, medicinari i istraživači podrazumijevaju skup publikacija koje nisu lako dostupne javnosti putem uobičajenih kanala, primjerice preko izdavača, no znanstvenici tvrde da je ta literatura "najčešće autentična i aktualna".

"Kada sve posložite, postaje jasno da postoji vrlo duga povijest koja polinezijske moreplovce povezuje s Antarktikom", rekla je voditeljica projekta Priscilla Wehi iz novozelandskoga vladinog istraživačkog instituta Manaaki Whenua.

"Ustanovili smo da njihova veza s Antarktikom i njezinim vodama traje stoljećima i počinje još od najranijih putovanja, a kasnije se nastavlja kroz sudjelovanje u ekspedicijama i istraživanjima koja su predvodili Europljani i kroz suvremena znanstvena istraživanja", rekla je Wehi.

Polinezijski moreplovci smatraju se jednima od najvećih nautičara u povijesti. Poznato je da su svojim kanuima uspjeli preploviti goleme udaljenosti između pacifičkih otoka s iznimnom preciznošću.

Istraživanje, čiji su rezultati objavljeni prošli tjedan u stručnome časopisu Journal of Royal Society of New Zealand, upućuje na to da su upravo polinezijski moreplovci doplovili do Antarktike puno prije prvih zapadnjaka koji su, po službenim podacima onamo stigli 1820.

Novozelandski znanstvenici vjeruju da je prvo putovanje Maora u vode Antarktike prethodilo njihovu dolasku na Novi Zeland u 14. stoljeću.

"Proučavajući polinezijsku usmenu predaju o plovidbama među otocima ustanovili smo da se ona odnosi i na putovanja maorskog moreplovca i istraživača Hui Te Rangiora i njegove posade s broda Te Ivi O Atea, vodama Antarktike vjerojatno još početkom sedmog stoljeća", rekla je Wehi.

Prema usmenoj predaji Maori su plovidbu opisivali kao "putovanje zamrznutim oceanom i maglovitim, hladnim i mračnim mjestom koje ne vidi sunca, a sve je puno ledenih vrhova koji probijaju nebo i potpuno su bez vegetacije".

Studija ukazuje i na to da maorske rezbarije i istkani uzorci na odjeći iz tog razdoblja idu u prilog izvješćima o njihovim ranim istraživanjima Antarktike.

Wehi je rekla da je usporedba tradicionalnih maorskih priča pomogla da se dobije širi pogled na povijest Antarktike, premda prevladavaju izvješća i zapisi europskih istraživača.

"Povijest je obično jednostrana i često postoje dominantne pripovijesti", rekla je za New Zealand Herald. "Često autohtona povijest, pa čak i pripovijesti žena postaju nevidljive, a ja smatram da ovu povijest moramo učiniti vidljivom."

Po službenim povijesnim podacima, moreplovac Te Atu prvi je Maor i Novozelanđanin koji je 1840. godine ugledao obalu Antarktike kao član ekspedicije Sjedinjenih Država.

Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshause, porijeklom baltički Nijemac i Rus Mihail Lazarev smatraju se prvim istraživačima koji su otkrili Antarktiku 1820. godine.

Polinezijski moreplovci vjerojatno su doplovili do Antarktike stotinama godina prije zapadnjačkih istraživača kojima se obično pripisuju zasluge za otkrivanje tog ledenog kontinenta, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.

Novozelandski znanstvenici proučavali su takozvanu "sivu literaturu", među kojom su brojni usmeni podaci, autohtona povijesna umjetnička djela i neakademski izvori, nastojeći pronaći povezanost između maorskih moreplovaca i Antarktike.

Siva literatura je pojam pod kojim obavještajne službe, knjižničari, medicinari i istraživači podrazumijevaju skup publikacija koje nisu lako dostupne javnosti putem uobičajenih kanala, primjerice preko izdavača, no znanstvenici tvrde da je ta literatura "najčešće autentična i aktualna".

"Kada sve posložite, postaje jasno da postoji vrlo duga povijest koja polinezijske moreplovce povezuje s Antarktikom", rekla je voditeljica projekta Priscilla Wehi iz novozelandskoga vladinog istraživačkog instituta Manaaki Whenua.

"Ustanovili smo da njihova veza s Antarktikom i njezinim vodama traje stoljećima i počinje još od najranijih putovanja, a kasnije se nastavlja kroz sudjelovanje u ekspedicijama i istraživanjima koja su predvodili Europljani i kroz suvremena znanstvena istraživanja", rekla je Wehi.

Polinezijski moreplovci smatraju se jednima od najvećih nautičara u povijesti. Poznato je da su svojim kanuima uspjeli preploviti goleme udaljenosti između pacifičkih otoka s iznimnom preciznošću.

Istraživanje, čiji su rezultati objavljeni prošli tjedan u stručnome časopisu Journal of Royal Society of New Zealand, upućuje na to da su upravo polinezijski moreplovci doplovili do Antarktike puno prije prvih zapadnjaka koji su, po službenim podacima onamo stigli 1820.

Novozelandski znanstvenici vjeruju da je prvo putovanje Maora u vode Antarktike prethodilo njihovu dolasku na Novi Zeland u 14. stoljeću.

"Proučavajući polinezijsku usmenu predaju o plovidbama među otocima ustanovili smo da se ona odnosi i na putovanja maorskog moreplovca i istraživača Hui Te Rangiora i njegove posade s broda Te Ivi O Atea, vodama Antarktike vjerojatno još početkom sedmog stoljeća", rekla je Wehi.

Prema usmenoj predaji Maori su plovidbu opisivali kao "putovanje zamrznutim oceanom i maglovitim, hladnim i mračnim mjestom koje ne vidi sunca, a sve je puno ledenih vrhova koji probijaju nebo i potpuno su bez vegetacije".

Wehi je rekla da je usporedba tradicionalnih maorskih priča pomogla da se dobije širi pogled na povijest Antarktike, premda prevladavaju izvješća i zapisi europskih istraživača.

"Povijest je obično jednostrana i često postoje dominantne pripovijesti", rekla je za New Zealand Herald. "Često autohtona povijest, pa čak i pripovijesti žena postaju nevidljive, a ja smatram da ovu povijest moramo učiniti vidljivom."

Po službenim povijesnim podacima, moreplovac Te Atu prvi je Maor i Novozelanđanin koji je 1840. godine ugledao obalu Antarktike kao član ekspedicije Sjedinjenih Država.

Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshause, porijeklom baltički Nijemac i Rus Mihail Lazarev smatraju se prvim istraživačima koji su otkrili Antarktiku 1820. godine.

Polinezijski moreplovci vjerojatno su doplovili do Antarktike stotinama godina prije zapadnjačkih istraživača kojima se obično pripisuju zasluge za otkrivanje tog ledenog kontinenta, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.

Novozelandski znanstvenici proučavali su takozvanu "sivu literaturu", među kojom su brojni usmeni podaci, autohtona povijesna umjetnička djela i neakademski izvori, nastojeći pronaći povezanost između maorskih moreplovaca i Antarktike.

Siva literatura je pojam pod kojim obavještajne službe, knjižničari, medicinari i istraživači podrazumijevaju skup publikacija koje nisu lako dostupne javnosti putem uobičajenih kanala, primjerice preko izdavača, no znanstvenici tvrde da je ta literatura "najčešće autentična i aktualna".

"Kada sve posložite, postaje jasno da postoji vrlo duga povijest koja polinezijske moreplovce povezuje s Antarktikom", rekla je voditeljica projekta Priscilla Wehi iz novozelandskoga vladinog istraživačkog instituta Manaaki Whenua.

"Ustanovili smo da njihova veza s Antarktikom i njezinim vodama traje stoljećima i počinje još od najranijih putovanja, a kasnije se nastavlja kroz sudjelovanje u ekspedicijama i istraživanjima koja su predvodili Europljani i kroz suvremena znanstvena istraživanja", rekla je Wehi.

Polinezijski moreplovci smatraju se jednima od najvećih nautičara u povijesti. Poznato je da su svojim kanuima uspjeli preploviti goleme udaljenosti između pacifičkih otoka s iznimnom preciznošću.

Istraživanje, čiji su rezultati objavljeni prošli tjedan u stručnome časopisu Journal of Royal Society of New Zealand, upućuje na to da su upravo polinezijski moreplovci doplovili do Antarktike puno prije prvih zapadnjaka koji su, po službenim podacima onamo stigli 1820.

Novozelandski znanstvenici vjeruju da je prvo putovanje Maora u vode Antarktike prethodilo njihovu dolasku na Novi Zeland u 14. stoljeću.

"Proučavajući polinezijsku usmenu predaju o plovidbama među otocima ustanovili smo da se ona odnosi i na putovanja maorskog moreplovca i istraživača Hui Te Rangiora i njegove posade s broda Te Ivi O Atea, vodama Antarktike vjerojatno još početkom sedmog stoljeća", rekla je Wehi.

Prema usmenoj predaji Maori su plovidbu opisivali kao "putovanje zamrznutim oceanom i maglovitim, hladnim i mračnim mjestom koje ne vidi sunca, a sve je puno ledenih vrhova koji probijaju nebo i potpuno su bez vegetacije".
