Nekoliko sati od Seattlea, na lokaciji do koje se može doći samo brodom, znanstvenici u laboratoriju Friday Harbor Sveučilišta u Washingtonu uzgajaju i proučavaju ugrožene morske zvijezde suncokrete nakon masovnog izumiranja u posljednjem desetljeću.

Morske zvijezde, kojih je nekoć bilo mnogo duž pacifičke obale od meksičkog poluotoka Baja California do Aljaske, desetkovana su. Otprilike 90 posto je nestalo od 2013. zbog tajanstvenog sindroma koji je možda uzrokovan klimatskim promjenama i sve većim temperaturama oceana.

"Postoje neki pokazatelji da je bolest možda bila povezana s nekim toplijim vodama otprilike u to vrijeme", rekao je Jason Hodin, znanstvenik u Friday Harboru, objašnjavajući tajanstvenu podudarnost nestanka morskih zvijezda zbog bolesti i izglede da su klimatske promjene možda imale ulogu u tome.

Laboratorij koji se nalazi na otoku San Juanu trenutačno se brine o 109 jednogodišnjih, 23 dvogodišnje, 12 trogodišnjih i približno 5000 ličinki morskih zvijezda suncokreta koje su uzgojene u zatočeništvu.

"Sada provodimo jedini svjetski program uzgoja u zatočeništvu za jedinu ugroženu morsku zvijezdu na svijetu", rekao je Hodin, koji je na čelu programa od njegova početka 2019. i nada se da će ih jednog dana pustiti u divljinu.

Dosadašnje studije s mladim i mlađim odraslim morskim zvijezdama u laboratoriju dale su neke ohrabrujuće rezultate. Morske zvijezde suncokreti možda mogu podnijeti toplije vode.

Nekoliko sati od Seattlea, na lokaciji do koje se može doći samo brodom, znanstvenici u laboratoriju Friday Harbor Sveučilišta u Washingtonu uzgajaju i proučavaju ugrožene morske zvijezde suncokrete nakon masovnog izumiranja u posljednjem desetljeću.

Morske zvijezde, kojih je nekoć bilo mnogo duž pacifičke obale od meksičkog poluotoka Baja California do Aljaske, desetkovana su. Otprilike 90 posto je nestalo od 2013. zbog tajanstvenog sindroma koji je možda uzrokovan klimatskim promjenama i sve većim temperaturama oceana.

"Postoje neki pokazatelji da je bolest možda bila povezana s nekim toplijim vodama otprilike u to vrijeme", rekao je Jason Hodin, znanstvenik u Friday Harboru, objašnjavajući tajanstvenu podudarnost nestanka morskih zvijezda zbog bolesti i izglede da su klimatske promjene možda imale ulogu u tome.

Laboratorij koji se nalazi na otoku San Juanu trenutačno se brine o 109 jednogodišnjih, 23 dvogodišnje, 12 trogodišnjih i približno 5000 ličinki morskih zvijezda suncokreta koje su uzgojene u zatočeništvu.

"Sada provodimo jedini svjetski program uzgoja u zatočeništvu za jedinu ugroženu morsku zvijezdu na svijetu", rekao je Hodin, koji je na čelu programa od njegova početka 2019. i nada se da će ih jednog dana pustiti u divljinu.

Dosadašnje studije s mladim i mlađim odraslim morskim zvijezdama u laboratoriju dale su neke ohrabrujuće rezultate. Morske zvijezde suncokreti možda mogu podnijeti toplije vode.

Nekoliko sati od Seattlea, na lokaciji do koje se može doći samo brodom, znanstvenici u laboratoriju Friday Harbor Sveučilišta u Washingtonu uzgajaju i proučavaju ugrožene morske zvijezde suncokrete nakon masovnog izumiranja u posljednjem desetljeću.

Morske zvijezde, kojih je nekoć bilo mnogo duž pacifičke obale od meksičkog poluotoka Baja California do Aljaske, desetkovana su. Otprilike 90 posto je nestalo od 2013. zbog tajanstvenog sindroma koji je možda uzrokovan klimatskim promjenama i sve većim temperaturama oceana.

"Postoje neki pokazatelji da je bolest možda bila povezana s nekim toplijim vodama otprilike u to vrijeme", rekao je Jason Hodin, znanstvenik u Friday Harboru, objašnjavajući tajanstvenu podudarnost nestanka morskih zvijezda zbog bolesti i izglede da su klimatske promjene možda imale ulogu u tome.

Laboratorij koji se nalazi na otoku San Juanu trenutačno se brine o 109 jednogodišnjih, 23 dvogodišnje, 12 trogodišnjih i približno 5000 ličinki morskih zvijezda suncokreta koje su uzgojene u zatočeništvu.

"Sada provodimo jedini svjetski program uzgoja u zatočeništvu za jedinu ugroženu morsku zvijezdu na svijetu", rekao je Hodin, koji je na čelu programa od njegova početka 2019. i nada se da će ih jednog dana pustiti u divljinu.

Dosadašnje studije s mladim i mlađim odraslim morskim zvijezdama u laboratoriju dale su neke ohrabrujuće rezultate. Morske zvijezde suncokreti možda mogu podnijeti toplije vode.
