Ekološka katastrofa prijeti Južnom Atlantiku jer neregulirani brodovi prekomjerno love ribu, upozorila je Međunarodna federacija transportnih radnika (ITF) i pridruženi latinskoamerički sindikati.

ITF i njegovi pridruženi sindikati pozivaju sve zemlje čiji brodovi love ribu u regiji da se hitno udruže s Argentinom i dogovore kvote iz predostrožnosti na temelju znanstvenih dokaza. U suprotnom, boje se da će brojne vrste riba nestati i da nitko neće moći zarađivati ​​za život od ribolova, piše portal thefishingdaily.com.

Otvorena mora u jugozapadnom Atlantiku jedino su područje svjetskih oceana bez funkcionalne UN-ove regionalne organizacije za upravljanje ribarstvom (RFMO). Pregovori o stvaranju takvog tijela uvelike su komplicirani dugotrajnim teritorijalnim sporom između Argentine i Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva oko Malvina/Falklandskih otoka koji se nalaze na južnom rubu problematične regije.

Na život latinoameričkih ribara duboko utječu strani brodovi iz Južne Koreje, Kine, Tajvana, Španjolske i ostalih koji love ribu u području ispred Argentine poznatom kao Mile 201. Argentina regulira ribolov do 200 nautičkih milja (370 km) od svoje obale, ali regija istočno od toga je neregulirana.

Posljednja izvješća potvrđuju kako se broj ribarica na tom području udvostručio u posljednjih petnaest godina. Samo se broj kineskih brodova povećao s 271 u 2020. na 375 u 2021. godini.

U izvješću se procjenjuje da su zalihe ribe, posebice lignje i oslića, pretjerano izlovljene.
