Udio tinejdžera s prekomjernom težinom ili pretilošću porastao je tijekom posljednjih 30 godina. Zbog toga su organizirane brojne javnozdravstvene kapanje usmjerene na zdravu prehranu i promicanje tjelovježbe među mladima. Paralelno s tim primjetno je i jačanje kulture mršavosti koja se promovira putem televizije, novina i društvenih mreža. Taj trend nije utjecao na smanjenje broja pretilih osoba koji je kroz posljednjih 15 godina ostao relativno stabilan već je doveo do dijametralno suprotnog ponašanja druge grupe mladih koja je postala opsjednuta fizičkim izgledom čije savršenstvo se postiže dijetama i iscrpljujućim treninzima.
The Conversationovo istraživanje je otkrilo da su tinejdžeri rođeni u novom mileniju koje se često naziva 'generacija Z' zabrinutiji za svoju težinu nego prethodne generacije. Također su otkrili da su Gen Z tinejdžeri koji sebe smatraju nedovoljno mršavima i koji odlaze na dijete skloniji simptomima depresije u odnosu na starije mlade.
Za provođenje istraživanja koristili su podatke od 22.503 britanskih adolescenta koji su podijeljeni u tri velike kohorte opće populacije. Rezultati su pokazali da je u usporedbi tinejdžerA iz 1986. i 2005. godine, više tinejdžera u 2015. godini pokušavalo smršavjeti dijetom i vježbanjem ili su za sebe rekli kako imaju prekomjernu težinu. Iako su takva ponašanja bila češća kod djevojčica, povećala su se i kod dječaka.
Također su primijetili da je više tinejdžera u ovoj generaciji vježbalo kako bi postiglo željenu težinu. To je zanimljivo, jer je iz drugih istraživanja poznato da je udio mladih koji se bave sportom ostao relativno stabilan. Dakle primarni cilj tjelovježbe postalo je mršavljenje, a ne sportske aktivnosti.
Presudni podatak je da mladi danas nemaju niži indeks tjelesne mase tako da fenomen porasta prekomjerne težine nije riješen, ali su zbog utjecaja medija i društvenih okolnosti teenageri skloniji depresiji ako smatraju da ne upadaju u idealizirane stereotipe ljepote čime su posebno pogođene djevojčice.
Istraživači su zaključili kako je glavni fokus javnih zdravstvenih kampanja ostao neriješen dok istovremeno stvara nove probleme mentalnog zdravlja djece u osjetljivoj pubertetskoj dobi. Pritisci koje osjećaju i stigma povezana s debljinom dovode do dubokog nezadovoljstva pa se sugerira i da bi se odnos prema tom problemu trebao promijeniti jer više nije jednoznačan.
Kampanje koje se provode među djecom usredotočuju se na prevalenciju pretilosti putem brojanja kalorija i vježbanje kao sredstvo održavanja idealne težine. Ipak, dokazi sugeriraju da je dijeta neučinkovita za dugoročno mršavljenje, a danak daje mentalno zdravlje.
Na pretilost uz to utječu brojne društvene odrednice, poput socijalno-ekonomski nepovoljnog okruženja zbog čega je vrlo opasno mladima poručivati da je gubitak kilograma isključivo osobna odgovornost. To može dovesti do iskrivljavanja slike o sebi i povezivanja osobne vrijednosti s težinom, a u konačnici i do poremećaja u prehrani.
To dodatno pogoršava pozitivan društveni stav spram onih koji bez obzira na metodu kojom to postižu gube kilograme. Poremećaji u prehrani i nezadovoljstvo izgledom pojavljuju se neovisno o indeksu tjelesne mase pa se ne treba voditi isključivo njime kada se govori o tome što jest, a što nije zdravo.
Stoga je presudno da se dobro tjelesno i mentalno zdravlje promiče iznad gubitka kilograma i da se djecu nauči uživati u vježbanju kao vremenu za učenje novih vještina i druženju s prijateljima, a ne kao kompenzaciji za konzumiranu hranu. Isto bi trebalo implementirati i u javno zdravstvo koje se predugo osvrće na samo jedan aspekt čitavog problema.

Udio tinejdžera s prekomjernom težinom ili pretilošću porastao je tijekom posljednjih 30 godina. Zbog toga su organizirane brojne javnozdravstvene kapanje usmjerene na zdravu prehranu i promicanje tjelovježbe među mladima. Paralelno s tim primjetno je i jačanje kulture mršavosti koja se promovira putem televizije, novina i društvenih mreža. Taj trend nije utjecao na smanjenje broja pretilih osoba koji je kroz posljednjih 15 godina ostao relativno stabilan već je doveo do dijametralno suprotnog ponašanja druge grupe mladih koja je postala opsjednuta fizičkim izgledom čije savršenstvo se postiže dijetama i iscrpljujućim treninzima.
The Conversationovo istraživanje je otkrilo da su tinejdžeri rođeni u novom mileniju koje se često naziva 'generacija Z' zabrinutiji za svoju težinu nego prethodne generacije. Također su otkrili da su Gen Z tinejdžeri koji sebe smatraju nedovoljno mršavima i koji odlaze na dijete skloniji simptomima depresije u odnosu na starije mlade.
Za provođenje istraživanja koristili su podatke od 22.503 britanskih adolescenta koji su podijeljeni u tri velike kohorte opće populacije. Rezultati su pokazali da je u usporedbi tinejdžerA iz 1986. i 2005. godine, više tinejdžera u 2015. godini pokušavalo smršavjeti dijetom i vježbanjem ili su za sebe rekli kako imaju prekomjernu težinu. Iako su takva ponašanja bila češća kod djevojčica, povećala su se i kod dječaka.
Također su primijetili da je više tinejdžera u ovoj generaciji vježbalo kako bi postiglo željenu težinu. To je zanimljivo, jer je iz drugih istraživanja poznato da je udio mladih koji se bave sportom ostao relativno stabilan. Dakle primarni cilj tjelovježbe postalo je mršavljenje, a ne sportske aktivnosti.
Presudni podatak je da mladi danas nemaju niži indeks tjelesne mase tako da fenomen porasta prekomjerne težine nije riješen, ali su zbog utjecaja medija i društvenih okolnosti teenageri skloniji depresiji ako smatraju da ne upadaju u idealizirane stereotipe ljepote čime su posebno pogođene djevojčice.
Istraživači su zaključili kako je glavni fokus javnih zdravstvenih kampanja ostao neriješen dok istovremeno stvara nove probleme mentalnog zdravlja djece u osjetljivoj pubertetskoj dobi. Pritisci koje osjećaju i stigma povezana s debljinom dovode do dubokog nezadovoljstva pa se sugerira i da bi se odnos prema tom problemu trebao promijeniti jer više nije jednoznačan.
Kampanje koje se provode među djecom usredotočuju se na prevalenciju pretilosti putem brojanja kalorija i vježbanje kao sredstvo održavanja idealne težine. Ipak, dokazi sugeriraju da je dijeta neučinkovita za dugoročno mršavljenje, a danak daje mentalno zdravlje.
Na pretilost uz to utječu brojne društvene odrednice, poput socijalno-ekonomski nepovoljnog okruženja zbog čega je vrlo opasno mladima poručivati da je gubitak kilograma isključivo osobna odgovornost. To može dovesti do iskrivljavanja slike o sebi i povezivanja osobne vrijednosti s težinom, a u konačnici i do poremećaja u prehrani.
To dodatno pogoršava pozitivan društveni stav spram onih koji bez obzira na metodu kojom to postižu gube kilograme. Poremećaji u prehrani i nezadovoljstvo izgledom pojavljuju se neovisno o indeksu tjelesne mase pa se ne treba voditi isključivo njime kada se govori o tome što jest, a što nije zdravo.
Stoga je presudno da se dobro tjelesno i mentalno zdravlje promiče iznad gubitka kilograma i da se djecu nauči uživati u vježbanju kao vremenu za učenje novih vještina i druženju s prijateljima, a ne kao kompenzaciji za konzumiranu hranu. Isto bi trebalo implementirati i u javno zdravstvo koje se predugo osvrće na samo jedan aspekt čitavog problema.
