Umirovljeni šerif na post-Divljem zapadu. Tko može danas bolje odigrati tu ulogu osim Kevina Costnera? Vjerojatno nitko. Costner je posljednji kauboj među glumcima otkako je u sedlu naslijedio Clinta Eastwooda u čijem je "Savršenom svijetu" dao sjajnu izvedbu.

Filmovi "Silverado", "Wyatt Earp", "Divlja prostranstva", serija "Yellowstone" i, dakako, oskarovac "Ples s vukovima". Uloge u ovim vesternima definirale su Costnera dok je on sam redefinirao žanr. "Let Him Go", skriveni filmski biserčić s kraja 2020., prirodan je nastavak tog i takvog kaubojskog Costnera i redefinirajućeg (neo)vesterna kojem je veliki obol dao scenarist i režiser Taylor Sheridan ("Sve ili ništa", "Tragovi u snijegu", "Yellowstone").

Sheridan nije uključen u "Let Him Go", redatelj i scenarist je Thomas Bezucha ("The Family Stone"), ali film je prilično "sheridanovski". Lako je zamislivo da je baš Sheridan napisao, ako ne i režirao, ekranizaciju istoimena romana Larryja Watsona, kad se čovjek sjeti "Hell or High Water" i "Wind River", posebice potonjeg.

"Tragovi u snijegu" posijali su tragove stoički kontemplativnog i napetog trilera unutar (neo)vesterna i "Let Him Go" ih je nastavio slijediti, ali i povremeno skrenuo s puta u smjeru (melo)drame s temama (o)kajanja i iskupljenja svojstvenima Eastwoodu i vizualnom taktilnošću filmova Kelly Reichardt.

Nesvakidašnja kombinacija utjecaja, melodrama koja svira u elegičnoj glazbi Michaela Giacchina i pretapa se s "badlands" vesternom u fotografiji Guya Godfreeja, no kombinacija funkcionira s Bezuchom iza kamere, tj. Costnerom i Diane Lane ispred nje. Bezucha je povukao pametan potez kad je Costnera upario s Lane u ulogama supružnika s ranča iz Montane ranih šezdesetih.

Lane i Costner odlično funkcioniraju i interaktiraju kao bračni par budući da su već bili slično spareni u "Čovjeku od čelika", u ulogama Kentovih, tj. Supermanove zemaljske majke i oca, Marthe i Jonathana. Paralele su očite, moguće i namjerne, osobito kad Costner i Lane, kao "lawman" u mirovini George i nekadašnja krotiteljica konja Margaret Blackledge, dobiju poriv da postanu adoptivni roditelji unuku pokojnog sina Jamesa (Ryan Bruce) koji stradava u uvodnoj sceni prilikom nesreće na jahanju.

Međutim, par godina nakon Jimmyjeve smrti, sinova supruga, udovica Lorna (Kayli Carter), ponovno se udaje za Donnieja Weboyja (Will Brittain) koji se nasilno ophodi prema njoj i njezinu sinu. Margaret će posvjedočiti njegovu izljevu nasilja promatrajući ih iz daljine, kroz prozor karavana, zbog čega odlučuje vratiti unuka pod svoje okrilje.

Scena je realizirana šutke, ali govori tisuću riječi o likovima, pa i samome "low key" pristupu filmu. Jer, "Let Him Go" je sporogoreći triler, režiran, glumljen i pripovijedan škrto, no efektno upravo zbog te "škrtosti" koju razbiju šokantni prizori nasilja. Likovi i njihove interakcije jasno su postavljeni (usputni kadar šerifovske značke, odlučnost Margaret), a to se može reći i za situaciju koja polako bilda prijetnju (za unuka) i konflikt (dviju obitelji, Blackledge i Weboy).

Ipak, kad ustreba, film ne okoliša nego prelazi na stvar i zateže tenzije do točke pucanja, kao u sceni kad George i Margaret dođu u Dakotu kod Jimmyjevih, njegova brata Billa (Jeffrey Donovan) i majke Blanche (upečatljiva Lesley Manville), predvodnice "white trash" obitelji koja ne pomišlja predati im unuka.

Stvari se kompliciraju, jer "tako je to s obiteljima", a sukob vrije do usijanja i krvna osveta je neminovna kad klan Weboyevih napravi prvi u nizu krivih poteza, ponašajući se plemenski i konstatno provocrajući Blackledgeove. Usputni susret Georgea i Margaret s mladim i samotnim indijanskim lutalicom (Booboo Stewart) koji nigdje ne pripada ima simboličko i metaforičko značenje.

Divlji zapad, mitski "American frontier", preuzeli su bijelci poput Weboyevih, divljiviji od onih koji su se smatrali divljima u vesternima do pojave Costnerova "Dances With Wolves". Film to podcrtava i iscrtava nešto novo unutar maskulinog žanra vesterna – matrijarhat, odnosno plemenski okršaj dviju majki.

Kevin Costner će se vratiti u četvrtoj sezoni serije "Yellowstone", a Diane Lane ćemo gledati kao Marthu Kent u Zack Snyderovoj redateljskoj verziji "Lige pravde".

Umirovljeni šerif na post-Divljem zapadu. Tko može danas bolje odigrati tu ulogu osim Kevina Costnera? Vjerojatno nitko. Costner je posljednji kauboj među glumcima otkako je u sedlu naslijedio Clinta Eastwooda u čijem je "Savršenom svijetu" dao sjajnu izvedbu.

Filmovi "Silverado", "Wyatt Earp", "Divlja prostranstva", serija "Yellowstone" i, dakako, oskarovac "Ples s vukovima". Uloge u ovim vesternima definirale su Costnera dok je on sam redefinirao žanr. "Let Him Go", skriveni filmski biserčić s kraja 2020., prirodan je nastavak tog i takvog kaubojskog Costnera i redefinirajućeg (neo)vesterna kojem je veliki obol dao scenarist i režiser Taylor Sheridan ("Sve ili ništa", "Tragovi u snijegu", "Yellowstone").

Sheridan nije uključen u "Let Him Go", redatelj i scenarist je Thomas Bezucha ("The Family Stone"), ali film je prilično "sheridanovski". Lako je zamislivo da je baš Sheridan napisao, ako ne i režirao, ekranizaciju istoimena romana Larryja Watsona, kad se čovjek sjeti "Hell or High Water" i "Wind River", posebice potonjeg.

"Tragovi u snijegu" posijali su tragove stoički kontemplativnog i napetog trilera unutar (neo)vesterna i "Let Him Go" ih je nastavio slijediti, ali i povremeno skrenuo s puta u smjeru (melo)drame s temama (o)kajanja i iskupljenja svojstvenima Eastwoodu i vizualnom taktilnošću filmova Kelly Reichardt.

Nesvakidašnja kombinacija utjecaja, melodrama koja svira u elegičnoj glazbi Michaela Giacchina i pretapa se s "badlands" vesternom u fotografiji Guya Godfreeja, no kombinacija funkcionira s Bezuchom iza kamere, tj. Costnerom i Diane Lane ispred nje. Bezucha je povukao pametan potez kad je Costnera upario s Lane u ulogama supružnika s ranča iz Montane ranih šezdesetih.

Lane i Costner odlično funkcioniraju i interaktiraju kao bračni par budući da su već bili slično spareni u "Čovjeku od čelika", u ulogama Kentovih, tj. Supermanove zemaljske majke i oca, Marthe i Jonathana. Paralele su očite, moguće i namjerne, osobito kad Costner i Lane, kao "lawman" u mirovini George i nekadašnja krotiteljica konja Margaret Blackledge, dobiju poriv da postanu adoptivni roditelji unuku pokojnog sina Jamesa (Ryan Bruce) koji stradava u uvodnoj sceni prilikom nesreće na jahanju.

Međutim, par godina nakon Jimmyjeve smrti, sinova supruga, udovica Lorna (Kayli Carter), ponovno se udaje za Donnieja Weboyja (Will Brittain) koji se nasilno ophodi prema njoj i njezinu sinu. Margaret će posvjedočiti njegovu izljevu nasilja promatrajući ih iz daljine, kroz prozor karavana, zbog čega odlučuje vratiti unuka pod svoje okrilje.

Scena je realizirana šutke, ali govori tisuću riječi o likovima, pa i samome "low key" pristupu filmu. Jer, "Let Him Go" je sporogoreći triler, režiran, glumljen i pripovijedan škrto, no efektno upravo zbog te "škrtosti" koju razbiju šokantni prizori nasilja. Likovi i njihove interakcije jasno su postavljeni (usputni kadar šerifovske značke, odlučnost Margaret), a to se može reći i za situaciju koja polako bilda prijetnju (za unuka) i konflikt (dviju obitelji, Blackledge i Weboy).

Ipak, kad ustreba, film ne okoliša nego prelazi na stvar i zateže tenzije do točke pucanja, kao u sceni kad George i Margaret dođu u Dakotu kod Jimmyjevih, njegova brata Billa (Jeffrey Donovan) i majke Blanche (upečatljiva Lesley Manville), predvodnice "white trash" obitelji koja ne pomišlja predati im unuka.

Stvari se kompliciraju, jer "tako je to s obiteljima", a sukob vrije do usijanja i krvna osveta je neminovna kad klan Weboyevih napravi prvi u nizu krivih poteza, ponašajući se plemenski i konstatno provocrajući Blackledgeove. Usputni susret Georgea i Margaret s mladim i samotnim indijanskim lutalicom (Booboo Stewart) koji nigdje ne pripada ima simboličko i metaforičko značenje.

Divlji zapad, mitski "American frontier", preuzeli su bijelci poput Weboyevih, divljiviji od onih koji su se smatrali divljima u vesternima do pojave Costnerova "Dances With Wolves". Film to podcrtava i iscrtava nešto novo unutar maskulinog žanra vesterna – matrijarhat, odnosno plemenski okršaj dviju majki.

Diane opet kao mama Supermana

Kevin Costner će se vratiti u četvrtoj sezoni serije "Yellowstone", a Diane Lane ćemo gledati kao Marthu Kent u Zack Snyderovoj redateljskoj verziji "Lige pravde".
